Diamond admired by Rockstar Games

The developers at IO Interactive deliberately sought to create the most sensational third-person experience on screen, building upon the hallmarks of their past work. Echoing the cinematic mastery of director Michael Mann in Heat, this interactive rendition amplifies those elements, offering players an immersive and heightened experience. The studio leveraged its expertise in maintaining a certain realism—established in the Hitman series—through ragdoll physics and mature narrative content, complemented by highly cinematic music. This combination contributed to a distinctive and memorable style that would later be reflected in Kane & Lynch. Furthermore, IO Interactive introduced innovative gameplay mechanics that were so effective that Rockstar appropriated them for two of its own titles: Max Payne 3 and GTA V. It is strongly recommended that players experience this atmospheric work firsthand and consider comparing it with the aforementioned titles to appreciate its influence and craftsmanship.

Kane & Lynch: Dead Men - 3/10 Subpar

Kane & Lynch: Dead Men is a third person action shooter developed by IO Interactive, the same people who created the popular Hitman franchise. The game follows a story of two antiheros, Kane, a former mercenary, and Lynch, a mentally unstable psychopath. The duo is reluctantly bound together when they’re forced into working for Kane’s former employer, The7, a notorious mercenary group. Falsely accused of betraying them by stealing a large sum of money and going on the run. The narrative is probably the strongest point of the game, the main protagonists Kane and Lynch aren't supposed to be likable people, especially the side characters as it becomes increasingly clear that everyone involved is acting in their own self interest. It does feel a bit underdeveloped as the game doesn't fully explore their backstories, Kane's story feels like we needed a lot of context and Lynch's story is hinted on and not really brought up again. In terms of gameplay, Kane & Lynch: Dead Men is a third-person shooter that uses cover based mechanics with some emphasis on using a squad, the shooting mechanics are somewhat functional, but not particularly satisfying with very little impact, the controls are a bit clunky as you snap onto cover without a prompt and reload automatically. The AI, however, is a major issue. Enemy NPCs often behave erratically, and your teammates, including Lynch, can sometimes be annoyingly unhelpful. This can lead to allies requiring a revive or at worst, neglecting to revive you which results in a game over. It's get incredibly frustrating near the end of the game which most of my deaths came from, it no longer felt enjoyable but a chore to play through. Kane & Lynch: Dead Men has its moments, my favorite being the bank heist and the level in Japan but it fails to deliver on its full potential. The narrative isn't bad but gameplay lacks depth, and the AI frustrations drag down the experience. It's a mixed bag, not a terrible game but certaintly not any good.

Rough around the edges

A balding, unstable, homicidal, drug addicted, emotionally-needy redneck with black outs is forced to work with a fellow robber (with a vulnerable teenage daughter) who betrayed his friends and stole heist money ... Sound familiar? Kane & Lynch was so utterly ignored, that no one even noticed Rockstar ripped off this game's plot when they made GTA V. But I digress. Kane and Lynch starts strong, however, the last few chapters are extremely awful. The cover system never works smoothly, squad mechanics add nothing, and checkpoints are ineptly placed. Weapons notably have little accuracy. It gets worse. Aiming causes the FOV to zoom in to a sickening 40 degrees, making close-quarter gunfights in low light a confused blur. That is, when the protagonist's head isn't blocking the reticle. The big choice in the end is so poorly delineated, I accidentally got the wrong option because I wasn't sure how to choose the one I actually wanted. That said, it's not a terrible game, as people claim, just an amateurish one. Contrary to popular belief, IO Interactive has always been an overrated developer who struggled with shooting mechanics and responsive third-person movement. The first Hitman games and Freedom Fighters aged pretty horribly. And unlike those games, Kane and Lynch's story is surprisingly good, it just isn't told competently--another recurring issue with IO. This game has a lot of wasted potential, sadly.

For whatever reason it didn't save any of my progress. It wasn't good enough to want to start over.

Cannot play coop

Main selling point of this game is the co-op, but this is disabled by EA or for some other reason inaccessible. Do not recommend.
