3D Realms and Voidpoint are proud to bring back the Build engine, which powered Duke Nukem 3D, Blood, and Shadow Warrior, in all of its hand-crafted pixelated glory. They’ve spent a lot of time tinkering under the hood to take advantage of new technology and techniques. Shelly “Bombshell” Harrison earned her nickname as a bomb disposal expert for the Global Defense Force. When transhumanist cult mastermind Dr. Jadus Heskel unleashes a cybernetic army on Neo DC, Shelly decides it’s time to start chucking bombs rather than diffusing them.
Her journey will leave trails of blood and gore in huge, multi-path levels filled with those famous colorful keycards and plenty of secrets and Easter Eggs to discover behind every corner. There’s also no regenerating health here, so stop taking cover and start running and gunning. Honestly, Ion Fury should probably come out on three hundred floppy disks.
Shelly’s quest to take down Dr. Heskel’s army will see her use an arsenal of weapons, all with alternate fire modes or different ammo types. Her signature revolver, Loverboy, brings enemies pain and players pleasure with single shots, or Shelly can fan the hammer Old West style. Shotguns are fun, but tossing grenades down their barrels and firing explosive rounds is even better. Bowling Bombs are just as violent and over-the-top as one would hope.
Ion Fury laughs at the idea of constant checkpoints and straight paths through shooting galleries. But just because this is a true old-school first-person shooter doesn’t mean there won’t be all the good new stuff the last two decades have brought. Headshots? Hell yeah. More physics and interactivity? You betcha. Widescreen, controller support, and Auto Saves? 3D Realms and Voidpoint took the best of both worlds and cooked it all into a bloody stew.

Ask yourselfs
-What moments do people remember from the old build engine games, how are those incooperated into the visuals (we are after all bragging about still using the build engine)?
-With complex levels, should we make sure the AI is smart enough to not only stay at the toes of the player, but also to be able to navigate through the levels on their own (or at least make sure it isnt broken)?
Lets start with the AI, the biggest problem is the pathfinding, this isnt even entirely related to level design/layout, if you are on a positon above the enemy with stairs leading to you, four out of five times the AI will just blindly charge into a wall and get stuck (especially noticeable in the last mission, ruining it entirely due to how easy it becomes), they rarely care about their surroundings and will blindly rush you straight on, which often results in them getting stuck somewhere, and facing the wall, viciously ofcourse.
Now regarding the aesthetics in the game, you may have seen the trailer, or screenshots and it seemed like they are going for a cyberpunk/blade runner ish look, this is wrong.
The game is distinguishable into four equally distributed parts regarding the visuals: The cyberpunk/dystopian city, The sewers, the warehouses, the undergroundlab.
Making a joke about how sewer/warehouse levels suck is one thing.
When i reach the fourth sewer because the game tries too hard to do the "all of the levels are connected with one another, no loading screens" without putting actual effort into transitions (most of the time, there are also a few times where the transitions are done well- who doesnt love train rides in build engine games?) it makes me wish to just go back to the times when were on earth in one moment and on the moon in the other, without going through a intergalactic sewer followed by a intergalactic warehouse both ofcourse looking like regular warehouses and regular sewers, without any twists to them to make them actually interesting.
You know those games that you get super excited about, but then it turns out that the thing you were excited about was just a gimmick, so you play for two hours and then never again?
This ain't one of those games.
I've had it for several weeks now, and keep coming back for more. Rock solid gameplay, awesome music, amazing level design that probably couldn't have been done that well in any other engine.
Otherwise, some people complained about the gun selection, but I think this was mostly because they didn't notice the alt fire on the cluster puck (as the complaints are usually that there isn't anything BFG-like). The weapons are great, and the bowling bomb became one of my favorite FPS weapons of all time (chuck 'em behind corners, chuck 'em in doors, chuck 'em in holes, and just watch for the giblets - if pieces of meat are flying out, then the bomb has found a target).
P.S. Ignore the 1-star reviews. Those are politically motivated, no sane person would give this game 1 star.
If you are fed up with all those "retro pixel indie" shooters that have exxagarated blocky looks and simplistic repetetive arcade gameplay but instead looking for true "90s game" that not only gets looks but also soul, then you are at right adress.
And for you all BUILD Engine fans - dont miss this out. You would be doing great disservice to yourselves. Duke3D, Shadow Warrior and Blood finally got their new fullfledged sibling.
really fun handcrafted artisan kinda game, some skill is required
pros:
-fast paced shooter
-very unique graphics
-suuper cheesy storyline
-true duke nukem sequel in spirit without the rights to the name
-great oldschool soundtrack
cons:
-doors close by themselves, got to throw those grenades quickly
-music too repetitive if i spend much time hunting secrets in one area
you get your moneys worth for sure, fk cyberpunk this is the real deal :D
