3D Realms and Voidpoint are proud to bring back the Build engine, which powered Duke Nukem 3D, Blood, and Shadow Warrior, in all of its hand-crafted pixelated glory. They’ve spent a lot of time tinkering under the hood to take advantage of new technology and techniques. Bigger levels, hundreds of new colors, and morphing maps that transform mid-level are all just a few of the advancements made to the engine.
Welcome to ION FURY!
Shelly “Bombshell” Harrison earned her nickname as a bomb disposal expert for the Global Defense Force. When transhumanist cult mastermind Dr. Jadus Heskel unleashes a cybernetic army on Neo DC, Shelly decides it’s time to start chucking bombs rather than diffusing them.
Her journey will leave trails of blood and gore in huge, multi-path levels filled with those famous colorful keycards and plenty of secrets and Easter Eggs to discover behind every corner. There’s also no regenerating health here, so stop taking cover and start running and gunning. Honestly, Ion Fury should probably come out on three hundred floppy disks.
Shelly’s quest to take down Dr. Heskel’s army will see her use an arsenal of weapons, all with alternate fire modes or different ammo types. Her signature revolver, Loverboy, brings enemies pain and players pleasure with single shots, or Shelly can fan the hammer Old West style. Shotguns are fun, but tossing grenades down their barrels and firing explosive rounds is even better. Bowling Bombs are just as violent and over-the-top as one would hope.
Ion Fury laughs at the idea of constant checkpoints and straight paths through shooting galleries. But just because this is a true old-school first-person shooter doesn’t mean there won’t be all the good new stuff the last two decades have brought. Headshots? Hell yeah. More physics and interactivity? You betcha. Widescreen, controller support, and Auto Saves? 3D Realms and Voidpoint took the best of both worlds and cooked it all into a bloody stew.
The true successor to classic shooters such as Duke Nukem 3D, Shadow Warrior and Blood.
Built using the original "Build" engine, with additional enhancements to further improve the technology.
Beautiful hand-crafted artwork, built using original old-school tools and methodologies.
7 exciting Zones, each spanning multiple maps.
Tons of enemies, weapons and carnage!
Best of both worlds! ION FURY brings back the classic '90s FPS action you love, with modern additions such as physics and checkpoints.
Classic level design, no procedural generation! Expect multiple paths, cool effects, and complex set pieces!
True tracked module music!
Incredible weapons with alternate firemodes!
Easy access to development tools and modding on day one!
Wow...just, wow. In the holy trifecta of retro revamp shooters - Amid Evil, Dusk and Ion Fury - this one actually uses a retro engine rather than recreating a retro look with a modern engine. (For the record I think that the trifecta should be a tetratych since Project Warlock kicks serious a**.) I don't think there is anything I can type that Youtubers LGR, Civvie 11 and Gmanlives haven't said - hell, they convinced me to buy the game!
If in doubt over whether or not you should pick this game up, check out the channels above to have your mind expanded like that mushroom trip in the hills you swore not to tell anyone about. Also consider that this game costs less than half of what a AAA game costs while delivering a campaign twice the length.
1. Graphics:
+ Atmospheric, good colors and contrast, excellent textures and vfx.
- Revolver and Shotgun models are kind of generic.
2. Audio
+ Soundtrack is one of the best that I've heard in classic shooters, has stuck with me after finishing the game.
- Weapon sounds feel like they could use a bit more oomph, right now it feels like they are just barely strong enough.
3. Story/Characters
+ Not much, the story is cliche villain attacks the city and the hero must defeat him. At least the lines are decent and well voice acted.
- There's no plot twist, no character development and no support characters, for a game that is quite lengthy. I feel like Shelly should've had a friend that get's killed or sacrifices at some point, to raise the stakes.
4. Level Design
+ Various layouts and locations to keep things fresh, with plenty of secrets to encourage exploration.
- Would've benefitted from having collectibles and a currency to buy upgrades for a change. Finding just health/ammo pickups gets boring.
- SMG/Minigun need more ammo drops.
- Some sections have too many enemy spawns, so they get tedious.
5. Combat
+ It's decent...
- Low enemy variety, especially as it is a lengthy game.
- Low gun variety. Missing rocket launcher, BFG-type gun, fun-type weapons(e.g. freeze/shrink ray, vodoo doll).
- The existing weapons need more tuning/balancing (pistol alt is op, too many grenade weapons. shotgun and crossbow main attacks feel weak).
- No upgrade system, which feels needed given the length of the game.
- I find movement speed to be a little too fast to aim properly while running.
I hope they overhaul the gameplay part in the future, as this game has the potential to become a classic.
The game is awesome, level design is awesome, gameplay is awesome. It also runs on my dual core thinkpad with 8GB of ram and is 3D which is also awesome.
