A huge step in adventure gaming

This game is an odd link between modern games and the cruelest of the early graphic adventures. It features an idea that was groundbreaking at the time: Replayability in an adventure game. You can play the game in different ways and experience different results. This offers an astoundingly lot of fun to try different approaches. In the same way as adventures from the era you can miss vital clues from an earlier part of the game that canot be retrieved later on. See them or miss them. And some are really easy to miss. Missing these can make later parts of the game brutally difficult. Especially as adventures still incorporated means to actually fail the game. Indy is a huge step up here as you can't block your way 'entirely' any more. You can navigate yourself into extremely difficult spots but luckily you can't block your progress completely, any more. What this means for the game is: If you actually haven't played it and aren't using a walkthrough, then finding and applying super rare clues can feel extremely rewarding. It also means that the game can feel very, very frustrating because it hasn't found the best ballance between challange and difficulty yet. Especially in the "action" sequences (brawling nazis in castle Brunwald). ScummVM with quicksaves and fast save states helps a lot. And there is no shame in using a walkthrough for the most weird puzzles. 90% of the game hit the right ballance, though. And also show a clear foundation to what the following adventures would (arguably) perfect later on.

Why not give the VGA Version as a bonus?

A CD-ROM version was released in 1990 for the FM-Towns, with 256-color graphics and a CD Audio soundtrack, as well as a VGA PC version, can we have it as a bonus? Needs Improvement But Still A Classic

This is my first time playing this, so no nostalgia here (that's all for Fate of Atlantis... this one was just before my time). This is a fun adventure with some really great puzzles, but it does have some flaws. The puzzles vary quite a bit. Some are fun and breezy, some are tricky but clever, and some are frustrating or confusing in a way that later games would wisely avoid. In particular, two of the three trials at the end do not translate to an adventure game interface at all, leaving you simply guessing as to what to do with no real hints. However, this is balanced out by most puzzles in the game having multiple solutions... though sometimes you have to save and reload to realistically find those solutions, and if you miss some and get stuck in too many fistfights, you're pretty much sunk. The graphics are classic Lucasarts pixel goodness, though FoA would improve on them immensely. The music could use some work, though, as many areas are dead silent, even though areas like the catacombs show that they COULD have a constant soundtrack. The music that does exist is great, I just wish there was more of it. The plot doesn't make a ton of sense if you haven't seen the movie, unfortunately. It also has some Monkey Island-style silliness in the writing, which can be either good or bad, but personally I preferred it when Fate of Atlantis played it straight. Considering what they had to work with, I feel like they got very creative with expanding and altering the movie to the adventure game format, and did a reasonably decent job. All in all, a solid and fun game, but one that's a bit hurt by its being based on a movie and on early Lucasarts still working out a few kinks in their game design process. But for the time, pretty damn good!

Still holds up as a great movie adaption

This LucasArt classic does still hold up today! However there are some parts that perhaps shouldn't be in there today... such as the arcade bi-plane section, the ways you can screw yourself over and having to replay sections, etc. There were some other parts that were harder (screw you Zeppelin) but other than that most of the puzzles and sections were decent. But at the same time the game is a great movie adaption adventure game! It really feels like you're playing the movie, sure there's some minor things not in there but essentially they've kept all the fun parts from the movie. That together with your typical LucasArt humor, the game is just plain enjoyable! Recommending this for both point n clickers playing it for the first time and old school fans who wants to relive that sweet nostalgia!

Good classic but with some quirks

One of the great games that defined the point-and-click genre. One of the greats from the Lucasarts - the giant of the adventures of its time. A nice game in itself, following the movie plot enough to be interesting, straying from it when needed to create riddles. Not as much tongue-in-cheek as Monkey Island series, yet humorous enough. Of course the visuals are dated so you must be a fan of the classics to fully enjoy it (luckily, those games don't age as badly as early 3d games). There are some issues though with the game: 1) There are some irreversible choices that can haunt you later in game. 2) The "what is" command which you use for the most part of your time in game could have been ommited completely in favour of automatic object highlighting (as in Monkey Island) 3) The biggest "sin" - the atrocious boxing mini-game. It actually made me stop playing in the castle and I think it was my last ever attempt at this game (I played it first when it came out on Amiga and several times after that already). So, be warned (especially about the boxing), but it's worth playing as one of the milestones in adventure games evolution.
