Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number is the brutal conclusion to the Hotline Miami saga, set against a backdrop of escalating violence and retribution over spilled blood in the original game. Follow the paths of several distinct factions – each with their own questionable methods and uncertain motivations – as unforeseen consequences intersect and reality once again slips back into a brilliant haze of neon and bloodshed.
Blistering combat against punishing opposition will require intense focus as new variables, weapons, and methods of execution are introduced throughout the struggle. Let the striking colors of an unmistakable visual style wash over as you meticulously cut down those that would stand between you and the ultimate meaning behind the massacre. This is the finale, this is the unquestionable end.

For me, the changes in this sequel are right up my alley. The masks have a big impact now, they make characters very different. This gives levels more replay value.
I enjoy the way the game throws some "gimmick" levels at you to keep it fresh.
I played a lot of the first game, and that expertise carried me through the first act or two of this game no problem. Then I hit a wall.
These levels are very big, and very intricate. A lot of angles to watch, men to keep track of, furniture to get stuck on. It's a nightmare, at first. But I kept at it, and I then I reached the thing that made the first game such a blast to play: that pure focus. This isn't a game about having it your way, about feeling powerful and in control. You need to be on point and aware of everything. You need to let go of all the distractions around you. It's seriously like meditating, throwing your squishy bloodsack of a body at these hordes over and over again, figuring out how to beat each level. Finishing a level is orgasmic. I spent 30 minutes on one level, at least 50 seperate attempts at each section, and I felt like a god when I won. If you liked Super Meat Boy, you will like this game.
The only thing that lacks is the plot, which does not hold up without the first game. So much of it is predicated on the effects of or setup for the original game's story. The plot is almost entirely forgettable, except for the scenarios it sets up.
The levels themselves are all pretty good, though very difficult compared to the first game. One notable thing is the increased use of windows, which mean that you have to consider the enemies line of sight a lot more than in the first game. If you enjoyed running like a madman through the level, you must be a bit more patient in this game. At least, the first time you play it. Once you get to experiment with the radical differences each masks gives you, and learn the layout a bit, you can start to play around. Try melee only runs of gun heavy levels.
All in all, it's not the bottled lightning of the first game, that cannot ever be recreated. But this is the best possible game we could have expected, and it's definitely worth the money. Especially if Dennaton get that Level Editor working.
I was so excited about this game, I was literally checking my library every hour to see if it had unlocked. Soon as it was there, it was on my laptop, ready to enjoy the manic fun. Sadly, for all the good things and incredible moments, the game is a bit of a let down.
Good things: The soundtrack remains incredible. Parts of the story are surprisingly tender. The presentation is absolutely stunning. The combat itself is still wonderfully tight.
Bad things: Too many of the levels are a weird mix of being open plan but utterly linear. Some of the stages are huge, full of invisible enemies carrying guns, able to slaughter you within seconds of entering a space because every wall is inexplicably covered in windows so you can never find respite, even though the full frontal approach almost always ends up with you dead. It makes the game frustrating and tedious instead of hilarious and challenging.
For example, in one section you need to enter a door. It's a single entrance with four enemies on the other side. One is immune to melee attacks, one has a rifle, the other two have bats/knives. Even with the LT pressed, it's hard to see their patterns. As soon as you enter, the heavy and the melee guys run at you. You need to get to the guy with the gun to have a chance, but he's always on the opposite side. So getting to him is a matter of chance more than skill or planning. After 15 attempts, knowing that the rest of the level would probably take me 30-40 minutes to get through (because there isn't the same focused frenzy of HM), I just gave up.
We've lost the freedom and expression of the original, replaced by a more restrictive and less coherent game. I can't imaging replaying any of the levels in this game, because they're a grind to get through.
Hopefully the level editor will see talented designers put together games that enhance some of the nice new features. Hopefully the developers do what they did with the original and implement some improvements.
The good: Better soundtrack and presentation than the first.
The bad: The Hawaii levels where you can't pick up weapons are worse than the hospital level and the bossfights from 1 combined. The normal levels feature fewer mask choices and the masks dictate your entire playstyle with an enforced gimmick rather than minor perks. The levels are packed with long hallways and huge rooms where you can be shot from offscreen and are forced to blindfire in the direction you hope the enemy is.
I regret my pre-order.
