One of the best titles of the 2010s
Hotline Miami's greatest flaw is that it isn't twice as long. Upon finishing the game, you're left with a sense of longing, wishing there was more to experience. This feeling is far better than when a game overstays its welcome, leaving you to regret the last few hours spent playing. Hotline Miami is fast, bloody, and action-packed, with a genuinely interesting, albeit simple, story. It easily stands out as one of the best indie titles of the 2010s. The soundtrack is phenomenal, and the visuals are uniquely distinct. However, the constant VHS effect, at least on my monitor, can strain the eyes after extended play. The wide variety of masks and the scoring system at the end of each level more than compensate for the lack of additional levels and maps. Each mask, except for the chicken one, introduces a different playstyle and presents unique challenges, especially the secret mask. Pursuing the secret ending was an exciting endeavor and a great excuse to replay each level. The campaign features several intriguing twists that genuinely caught me off guard, such as the unexpected visitor in the protagonist's apartment, or the twist during the second meeting between the motorcycle guy and Jacket. Overall, Hotline Miami is an amazing game worthy of 4-5 stars. My only pain point was the hospital level, which I found particularly challenging. It wasn't until my third playthrough that I realized the headaches could be avoided by taking a short rest—LOL.
