Not bad, but...

Pros.: -the campaign story is decent. -the tactical aspect is great. (unit counter, positioning, making use of terrain) -meaningfull active abilities that are not just there for high level play. Could be better.: -when selecting factions for skirmishes, it would be great to have info of the units and playstyle, not just a picture. -the ai is inconsistent, sometime it will rush you while being at a severe disadvantage, other it will use hit and run tactics taking advantage of its unit composition. -the dlc factions feels a copie pasted from the base one, but they still have some differences making them play a little diferent. Cons.: -worst camera in the history of rts -price too high for content -the pathfinding seems to have problems on most units that are larger than the light ones. which cause problems often in a game where positioning is do or die for your units.

My Favorite Sci-Fi RTS

I love Total Annihilation and Starcraft and Earth 2150 and games like that, but this one is easily the most immersive and fun sci-fi real time strategy games I've played! The atmosphere, the story, the attention to detail: this is probably the closest gaming as gotten to recreating the experience of Dune. The endless desert and dry valleys might seem they'd become dull, but there's a ton of variations in height (which has tactical advantages) resources and wreckage to look at while you're rumble your Mad Max crew of vehicles to battle and exploration. What feels the best is the radio chatter. There must be hundreds of dialogue samples and mid-battle it really does feel like presiding over organized chaos as troops call out maneuvers, remark on their conditions, and have a dozen statements simply to make if you send them to go somewhere. Refreshing. You can hit Spacebar to zoom out completely from the gigantic maps to see everything you need to know quickly (resources locations, enemy movement, your troops...etc) and creating a number group is as easy as double clicking a unit type then holding a key and tapping a number. I never feel overwhelmed and battles do feel like a matter of positioning, unit type, using special abilities, upgrading...it all feels dynamic. The voice actors are VERY dry (no pun intended) but realistic. It feels like classic Star Trek: science officers with heavy weapons trying to outmaneuver a more powerful warlike empire. Sometimes I don't attack-click but instead select one enemy for attack...and after than unit dies all of my units just stop dead in their tracks without a command. It pays to just generally target an area instead of make specific attack commands, although the advantage of this single-mindedness is that you can target one boss enemy or choice target and your units will attack it until they die even if they're getting shot to pieces. Loyal to the end. Beautiful, tactical, comprehensive. I need to check out the original!

Отлично, но есть нюансы

Хорошая RTS с прекрасным гейплеем и тактическим разнообразием(благодаря песчаным дюнам), есть прописанный сюжет(который в русской озвучке может мелькнуть на секунду мелким шрифтом в левом верхнем углу, или в самый разгар битвы будет какая-то инфа, которую ты пропустишь). Атмосфера Homeworld передана замечательно, чего только стоят синематики и музыка, а про модельки техники вообще говорить не приходится. Не хватает тонких настроек для игры с ИИ по типу выключить исследования или битва только на кораблях малого типа, как это было в Homeworld 2. Также, нету паузы, к которой я привык. Мультиплеер я не попробовал. В общем, это игра является отличным сюжетным дополнением к Homeworld 2, в которую интересно поиграть.

Unparalleled quality!

I finished the game twice (with some years between the two times) and I can’t stress enough the quality of “Deserts of Kharak”! So, I want to make this post in all store’s pages relevant to the game, and prompt anyone (who likes strategy games, that is) to buy it! It is the prequel of all Homeworld games. There are 13 missions, which I would guess took me around 20-25 h in total. A strategy game that looks more like the tactical strategy genre (no base building, you are constantly on the move), than the normal strategy genre. Of course, this makes sense in the overall story of having a carrier, which you must get to a specific place on your planet. Also, the carrier can’t be placed at one spot for the entirety of each mission, but it has to be moving around. That’s because the resources are very scattered on each map (no one spot with too much of it), which makes you to have to constantly move around the map with your units, and the carrier has to be near too, as if it gets destroyed, it’s game over! Another thing to praise is the sound. You will be listening to every person (inside his/her unit), as if you hear them through radio communication, which I really never found tiresome to be hearing! On the contrary, I was feeling I was "along with them" too! The resources you collect, as well as the upgrades you perform, and the units you create, all follow up through the next missions. Three difficulty levels. I played it on normal and, while there were some tense moments (as expected), nothing "cheaty" from the game. With a different approach, all can be done!
