New game, classic style
As a longstanding fan of the Quest for Glory series, I was extremely excited about Hero-U's release and have been playing it nonstop over the last week. It's great! The game, released without fanfare, took several years and much heartache from the Coles (who created the original QFG series), and it was well worth it. The game features a fun and interesting storyline, with enough setups for a sequel to keep you wanting more. The characters are enjoyable to interact with, and the hero, a rogue-in-training named Shawn, provides more personality than the flat-faced protagonist for the original Quest for Glory. Given that this was a small, independently-made game, it does have a few flaws or areas for improvement, For one, there are times when the school feels a little lonely, and more NPC-type characters wandering the halls would help with that. It would also have been nice to explore the town of Caligari, which the other characters frequently allude to, although the school has enough space to occupy your time. A bigger budget could also spice up the game considerably, with more animated sequences and voice actors to help read out Lori Cole's trademark humorous dialogue. But these are minor quibbles. This game may not be for everyone, but if you like the traditional adventure game, with a dash of self-referential humor, then you should enjoy Hero-U. I hope that the Coles are able to make a sequel, because after playing through the game once, I want more!
