Cool concept but Game breaking bugs ruin
It was great for about 30 minutes but after getting a bug where the characters ai breaks trying to finish their turn in the 1 mission, rquiring a full restar of the mission and then getting the same bug 10 times in the second mission which is longer it doesn't make sense to keep going. Such a shame.

Simple but not easy...
HW is a quite enjoyable turn based western shooter with supernatural elements. It is simpler than other games from this genre, but not too easy. You have 3 difficulty settings to adjust it to your level of skill. The main game offers several campaigns. Each campaign consists of a strategy map where you plan your next move and decide which location to go to next. Some locations just advance the story or offer stores to buy supplies and equiment, others lead to tactical encounters. The campaign-stories are not totally awesome but quite enjoyable. The setting is fresh and offers a nice break from the typical fantasy or sci-fi setting. With the main game and the DLC it will take around 20 hours to finish the game. I am not so found of the DLC though, it heavily recycles assets and has a mediocre story with annoying missions. I think it is only for hardcore fans. If you like games like Xcom, HOMM, Mordheim etc. you may give this indie game a try.

Excellent Wild West RTS
For anyone looking to fill the gap until RDR or looking for more XCOM like fun you should consider Hard West. The graphics are great and make you feel like you are in the wild west. Each scenario is bite sized to allow for pick up and play fun. The "filler" in between combat scenarios like the prospecting and mini quests are fun and an engaging way to build story around the main missions. The combat is turned based and built around hit percentages and luck. To augment battles their is a card based augmentation system which allows for special perks and abilities. The story itself revolves around our main character and his interaction as a child with a demonic presence that changes his life as he grows with his wife Florence. The story has a Jonah Hex vibe with some devil at the crossroads flare from Ghost Rider. Excellent game for an excellent price. The only reason I pulled one star is the menu system can be a little lagy and some things are not explained very well even in the breif tutorial.

Glitch Hard the West
Caution! Spoilers ahead. The game has beautiful visuals, the music is good, art direction also and I do love the level design. I'm not a wild west fan so I bought this only because of the high discount. But I like X-Com like games. So I thought to give it a try. The story is probably good, don't know, after some time the intro starts glitching and the game in 50% of cases just freezes. But I did make it to 90% of chapter one. Other thing that frustrated me was the game progression itself. You don't want to go through tutorial? Get ready to fight the same lvl but with more enemies, and by the way it's also mission that's harder than the third one where you gun down the whole mining protection cartel. Geared up and customized a character to the detail? Don't worry, the story will pluck it away from you just because it dictates so. Return it back again, take another away, not return it, take the third one away... don't know if you get that one back, I just started anew (there were several things I did wrong, should have concentrated on building up my mining skills). Tutorial again, taken the 'yes please guide me sir' just to avoid the harder intro lvl. Got to the chest where one of the spoilers resides and... the lvl doesn't end. You can run around, explore the small homstead to the last rock but the narrator doesn't show up anymore. Reinstalled, checked my drivers, everything is updated. Didn't help. The game could be really good, but I wouldn't know. For me it just didn't work out.

Wickedly fun
I highly recommend the Eurogamer video review. Before the last battle of the first scenario, I finally got the Equalization skill: set everyone to 1 hp. I needed it for an achievement, so I used it as the first action and went ahead with the battle. About half way through, having picked off a couple of enemies in the classic flank and shoot from cover to cover style, I was feeling confident. Then out of nowhere, 5 enemies converged on the house, peeking through windows and open doors. I was cornered, with everyone exposed and no way out. And I was playing on ironman mode. If even one of my critical characters took a hit, I would have to restart the whole scenario. As I was cycling through my characters, trying to plan a way out, I noticed that I also had the Barrage skill. As luck would have it, that character still had enough luck to use it, pun intended. Why not? One action point later, 4 of the 5 enemies laid dead in a gunkata shootout right out of the movie Equilibrium, or the game Alpha Protocol. A couple of turns later, I won, easily. This was Hard West at its best. The best way to enjoy this game is to find the cheesiest way to use the skills you have and watch your enemies fall like dominos. I used Equilizatio-Barrage again later, killing 6 enemies at one point. I used the Jinx... I will let you discover that. That mission is kind of scripted. The point is, this is not XCOM. If you aren't being crazy or cheesy or flamboyant, you are not having much fun. This applies to the scenarios as well. Each is really a mini campaign with its own theme. You can be a 49er or a crazy scientist or a mass murderer out for revenge. They are meant to be distinct but connected, not a cohesive whole. Before each scenario and each battle, ask yourself, "What kind of crazy shenanigans can I get into this time?" Downsides: The scenario mechanics, though distinctive, are kind of shallow. There are only so many fun skills, so the tactical battles get tiresome after a while.
