I've played a ton of metroidvania games while we wait for Silksong. This one is unique in awesome ways. The Mexican style and music is beautiful!! The combat is combo-smashing fun! There are some really great (and fair) puzzles in here too. If you pay attention to the map, you can find all the power-ups by exploring. Fair warning, to get 100% you have to complete some very difficult challenges. But it's worth it!
‘Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition’ is a Metroidvania game with a Mexican flavour. It’s the final iteration of the first ‘Guacamelee!’ game that includes added contents of previous DLCs, such as new areas, new boss and new abilities. I’ve never played the original ‘Guacamelee!’, but I really enjoyed what ‘GSTCE’ offered.
If you are familiar with the gameplay of early ‘Metroid’ and ‘Castlevania’ games, as well as ‘Zelda II: The Adventure of Link’, then you’ll be right at home with ‘GSTCE’. It’s an action adventure game, in which you traverse maze-like environments, fight enemies, and collect abilities. You’ll then use the newly earned abilities to explore previously inaccessible areas.
While ‘GSTCE’ does not hide its homage to and inspiration from these classic games, it does distinguish itself through its vibrant art design, frantic action, and Mexican themes. ‘GSTCE’ is challenging, and at times frustrating. Just when I thought I’d give up, I’d return after a brief break to eventually overcome those difficult platforming and boss fights. In the end, all your successes in the game feel well-earned.
At default difficulty setting, I got more than 10 hours’ worth of game from just the main campaign. I didn’t even take on the El Infierno’s challenges, seek out the STCE exclusive final power-up, and collect all the Orbs. ‘GSTCE’ is a very enjoyable game with great replay value. It’s definitely worth checking out if you haven’t played ‘Guacamelee!’ yet.
I want to give a lot of credit to the devs for making a Mexican themed game. I haven't seen any other game do this and so this is pretty unique. I thought the artstyle, early story, and music were all beatiful and charming. I only made it a few hours in though because the game is kinda boring. The combat was not for me, you just mash the buttons. The exploration was very linear as well.
While playinmg i had this feeling that the game could youse a bit more work.
The combat was good, but a bit too easy. I think you can actually reach the endgame without ever dying.
The story was there but it was very basic, and it dosent connect with the protagonist. You are just the hero of the game, that's it.
The theme is "luchadores, day of the dead, latinos stuff", and its consistent and it's nice, but it feel like a collage of stuff without much sense.
The humor is kinda okay, but it falls flat more that one time
The platforming was good thought, i enjoyed it.
For 2 bucks it's awesome, and i hope the second game expand on this one, but that said, you may find it a bit lacking.
