Bursts of frustration

I love my ARPGs and have been a huge Diablo fan for years. I've played all forms of variations on the formula and Grim Dawn has been one of the best! My biggest beef with the game though is that there are these small burst when it just doesn't respond. There's no latency lag or anything. I'll be tapping away to get a skill to activate with no response. So while I'm getting mauled by a mob I switch to another skill that immediately responds but then is suddenly over run when the game desides to deploy the previous unresponsive skill. I've had moment so trying to drop the Soldier Forcewave skill with no luck, try to kite around the mob, then suddenly come to a standstill with a spam of Forcewave as the game catches up -- again, after I've moved on to something else. There's some really great stuff here otherwise. I mean, I almost put my fist through the screen a couple of times when the brusts of frustration hit during the second plot boss but there's just so much good stuff here that I kept pressing onward.

Reasonable Blend of Diablo and PoE

Note: This review is for Grim Dawn, with no DLC included. Grim Dawn is a modern Action RPG (ARPG) along the lines of Diablo, Path of Exile (PoE) & Torchlight. Gameplay is an interesting blend of Diablo & PoE with multiple build options, a reasonable ramping of difficulty and an intriguing "dark" setting. It does not differ mechanics-wise than any other ARPG, it's still a hack & slash button mashing dungeon looter. Pros; Story-line is more mature than competitors More build options/complexity than Diablo Genuine difficulty, but doesnt feel "unfair", your deaths can almost always be avoided with better play. Graphics are reasonable, have aged fairly. Cons: Less build options and depth than PoE Lack of real end-game The decisions you make in-game don't have any real effect on the game outcomes There is no "rebuilding of settlements" as advertised. The story progresses on with very little changing. No way to change your secondary class (outside of hacks) TLDR; If you like ARPG's, play this game. If you don't, give it a go anyway. Reasonable story and fun classes & mechanics are only diminished by lack of end-game.

Regrets *Spoiler not in a bad way ;)*

I was really hesitant to purchase this game after a few really frustrating experiences with POE. I've always been a fan of the Diablo series minus the 3rd install. But Torchlight 1 &2, Titan Quest, Diablo 1 & 2 and if anyone remembers Dungeon Runners? Those were ARPGs that I sunk my teeth into back in the day up to even now. I have been watching LPs on the YT by a poster that goes by GhostLPs, if your into the old school RPGs that are based a lot upon grid based RPGs as well with a mixture of other old school somethings. The videos are short and sweet and fun to watch. Anyhow, I had been on the limb about picking up Grim Dawn until he suggest that if I liked playing Titan Quest, then I most likely would enjoy Grim Dawn and man was he spot on! My regret is, that while the most of the whole series was on sale the day before. I had just bought the game proper to see if I would like it or not. As I said before, POE has left a bad taste in my mouth. I have no doubt the series will go back on sale again in the future, but until that time. I will sludge on in my regrets and well my *hehe* tiny library of rpgs that would most likely take me 15 life times to complete :D

Decent.

I've had this game for quite awhile and play it often. I've completed it through the AoM dlc and really enjoyed the story. I love the dark/gritty feel of the world and the creatures that are encountered. Also, I think the loot filter tool is great and the fact that you can combine two classes to make a more unique character is good as well. The celestial/devotion system is nice and provides extra buffs/abilites. NIcely done there. HOWEVER, I've come to realize that the devs have either never heard of or don't care about the term "less is more". This game has way, WAY too many stats. Damange stats, debuff stats, buff stats, stats for this, and stats for that. This is a hack/slash game...not an MMO. Some of these stats are seperated for reasons I cannot understand (fire and burn for example). Also, the devotion system will only allow for 55 points to be spent. That's a very stingy amount. Sadly, another gripe I have is that out of all stats, the resists seem to count the most, so I'm always saying: GET RSIST UP! This counts even more when you start a new playthrough on harder difficulties because the devs thought it was okay to decrease your resists accordingly. So I take time to find gear and bufffs to raise my resists, just so the devs can take it away...lol. WHO....THOUGHT....OF.....THAT? The grindiness is painful and not fun (unlike Diablo 3 RoS) Lastly, because of these problems I have restorted to using a mod or two...just for some rebalancing and removing the painful grind. I just purchased the Forgotten Gods dlc and starting with a new toon without mods to see how far I can get before the pain sets in. If you like these kinds of games, I' d stil recommend it, just wait for a good sale, like I did.
