I get why it's a "Masterpiece"
(4.5/5) I have often heard people refer to this game as a 'mastahpeace', but now having beaten the game, I wouldn't disagree with that statement. Firstly, do you need to play the other games? Not really, but you would get more satisfaction out of catching the parallels between Kratos in the world of Greek mythology vs Norse. The story is phenomenal, but contained when compared to the world building presented within the game. You follow Kratos and his son as they are embark on a modest task which takes them through the Norse land. The game doesn't hide the fact that you won't get everything in this game, but as a contained story/intro into an epic, the story is extremely personal and satisfying. My assumption is that the world really opens up in the sequel (hopefully to come to GOG). The game will kick your ass in the early hours (you eventually download enemy patterns), but that's more so due to a lack of resources (there's a reason why more people have the achievement for having the mid/late-game armour set than the early/mid-game armour set), but you will eventually kind of start power fantasying (even at GMAC diff.). If you've played Control, the pacing is similar. Stick with it, and you'll get why people hold it in such high regard. Many games build up or horizontal, but damn, I will admit that I grinned at the thought of down. The game is an open-world Metroidvania-esque action adventure mashing up new generation Souls-lite combat with Uncharted/new trilogy Tomb Raider exploration/platforming in the world of GOW. If that sounds up your alley, this game is for you.
