Owned on the PS4

I have owned this game since it came out for the PS4. It definitely needs a controller to play, I see no way of getting around that, keyboard and mouse are far too clunky for this. It is also very hard, and unforgiving but in an artificial way. Unlike Darksouls style difficulty, there is enough randomness to everything that you can just get screwed by the drops and there is nothing you can do about it. It tries to be both episodic and rogue like, and it just falls apart because of that. If they bothered to give it the length and depth of say, a nethack, with more than 5 levels per episode, or allow you to keep everything from the previous episode if you live that long... well different story, but that is not the case. there is no continuity of vehicle... just an overall mess of things. On the plus side, the voice acting is rather good, even if the writing does not give them much to play with.

I am the target audience for this game

This is an extremely satisfying game. The graphics and explosions are super awesome, you really feel like you did a lot of damage when you destroy a large enemy. Your character even trash talks the enemies while you are dogfighting! The difficulty is high but very rewarding. The gameplay is similar to many older top down space shooters I used to play. Some that come to mind are Escape Velocity, Asterax, or Maelstrom (Asteroids clone) for the Macintosh (os 7 era). There is a lot more close quarters combat though and only some of the scenery can damage you (and the enemies). I find that the mouse and keyboard control is very easy to use, to me it is like a top down fps style WASD keyboard layout. If you ever played DOOM and looked at the map while walking around, you may know what I am talking about (except you couldn't see enemies there). Oddly the strafing function is only available when you earn it on the 3rd level or so. I grew up watching Robotech and Voltron and this game is an interactive love letter to those kinds of space anime. Even the pause screen pretends to be a paused VHS recording with white interference on the top and bottom of the screen and 90s style VHS menu font. I seem to be the exact target audience for this game and it is very well done. If I have one complaint it would be that the character animations (not really in the gameplay itself) are done flash style rather than in the drawn animation style they are emulating. Thats a pretty small complaint though.

Good concept, fun. Bring a controller.

Although unfinished, Galak-Z is a great action game about dashing through tunnels in a spaceship and causing mischief between three enemy factions. The first part of the game is pretty limited, but if you can make it through the mechanic you get really opens up your strategic options. Although the game is "meant to be played" with long periods between saves, I found the mission saves to be much nicer given that even if you don't have to start everything over again there's a fair amount of repetition. Looking forward to episode 5.

No Final Chapter/Season

This game gets an ignominious one star rating because, as of the time of writing (11/7/2015), it does not include its (apparently planned) final chapter, instead concluding its included content with a cliffhanger at the end of the fourth "season" (of the five listed on the chapter select screen). According to one of the developers on the game's steam forum, the final chapter will be released as "free DLC". The game is otherwise satisfying but there's no excuse for failing to list this information in the game's description. To my knowledge GoG does not allow users to edit reviews so, to those reading this review at a later date, please do your own research as to whether the final chapter has been released or whether, at the very least, the developers have added some sort of indication in the store description as to its absence.
