Freddy Pharkas: Frontier Pharmacist

... and it's not dirty? Oh. Wait. It's still dirty. As in... it's a Western! There's dirt everywhere! Welcome to the west - and you're Freddy Pharkus! The game requires ownership of the manual to produce some of the things you need to make (copy protection at it's worse!) - and some of the puzzles are pretty difficult to piece together - but the game is over all, very fun - and very funny!

This game is really funny! It is a traditional adventure game with many items to pick up and use. The writing is spot on and will make you laugh out loud. Please play this game!

I loved Sierra games. I grew up with them. Hero's Quest (renamed Quest for Glory) was my favourite series. But I've played mostly everything. Freddy Pharkas is one of the 'one off' unique themed adventure games that Sierra (and Dynamix) pumped out before Activision bought Sierra and destroyed it forever. Willy Beamish and Conquest of the Long Bow were a couple other gems. But as for Pharkas, the humor wasn't too bad - although probably quaint by today's post-Southpark standards. The twist at the end was good. In fact, this game had one of the best climaxes in any adventure game, even compared to the big series like Space Quest and King's Quest. The copy protection was annoying since you had to read the manual to figure out how to make the pharmaceutical mixtures you needed. There were a number of puzzles that got confusing and frustrating so a bit of a guide or walk-through is probably a good idea. But in general, it wasn't too bad. Freddy Pharkas is a gunslinger who got his ear shot off and turned pharmacist. The characters are as well written and full bodied as any Sierra game and this certainly does not feel like any less of one of those games. Freddy Pharkas also has a pretty big crush on the local school teacher. It's a unique story, charming in its own way (hemorrhoid cream and all), and a pretty stellar example of how the Sierra formula works to tell great stories - even beyond the standard series. I would predict that adventure games will one day make a come back... whenever AR/VR finally becomes good. I might be an old man, if I'm even alive, but eventually the adventure game platform is going to be incredibly interesting again.
