In 1815 Napoleon escaped from exile on the island of Elba, returned to France and made his way to Paris in triumph. His disbanded troops once again took up arms and flocked to his colors. The defeated ruler of Europe was, once again, Emperor of France. The Allies were taken by surprise. The master military tactician was back! I played this game like a ton back when it came out. I was 12 or 13 and already a big fan of the Napoleonic Era. Don't get me wrong this is not a very realistic game and truth to be told it had a lot of bugs. You could win the battle of Waterloo for the French in the highest difficulty with zero casualties on your side. Take one piece of horse artillery, take it to the left british flank and shoot one unit until if flees and continue with the next one. Wellington never moved a bit.
The informations in the Army Roster are great and for some time I could tell the order of battle out of my head.
Six battles, 2 small finctional ones and the other 4 of the final Low Countries days. For its' day, an excellent interface, all point and click with the Order of Battle giving a clear overview of your forces.
The graphics and animations are, well, of their day, though the zoomed out view is adequate, and funnily enough the abstraction of combat and lack of sound effects works for a Generals Eye view of the battle.
For grognards and nostalgia.. One star off for no custom battles, one off because no manual (or red challenge word sheet, though I guess I can throw mine away now).
First, the things FoG does not or does a bad job at. The battles have no fog of war. There is no campaign included, not even the possibility to play the battles of the Waterloo campaign one after the other with losses being carried over. The gameplay is limited to the 4 historical battles and 2 smaller, fictional ones; no custom battles option. You always play the commander in chief, you can't play a battle as a subordinate commander. The AI is constantly overstrained. Units somtimes react when under attack, and somtimes not; AI Division and Corps commaders stick to rigid formations, even if part of their units are held up in towns or woods, the rest just blindly moves on. It is very hard to actually loose a battle against the AI even on the highest difficulty level. The original manual is included in the installation.
The individual units on the battlefield are infantry and cavalry brigades, and artillery battteries. Also, there are Division, Corps and the Army commanders. Graphically, the game is presented in cute bright colors, while the sound is minimal, with mostly cannon and rifle shots, and the appropriate drum and bugle signals when the player issues an order to a unit. When an AI commander has reached his assigned objective, the player will be notified by an instantaneous report.
The database is very good and contains, apart from the unit composition down to battaillon level, small biographies and battle histories for the commanders and units; also, every commander down to Division level is shown with a portrait, and there are lots of portraits of the uniforms of the regiments.
The game was one of the first "real time" battle simulations. I still reinstall the game from time to time, in part due to the nostalgia, and in part to have some relaxing fun. If you are not here for the nostalgia and the criticisms above do not deter you from spending your money, then you surely won't regret your decision :)
This game at the time was quite something. I liked the database, I would just spend so much time reading the bios and stuff. This game made me interested in the Napoleonic Wars. The game itself is basically a series of real and fictional battles where you play as France, England or Prussia. It plays okay for the most part but there are certain things that can be very annoying, for example getting into buildings or units that for some reason move on their own and before you know it your artillery unit ventured forth and got slaughtered. Also I noticed that if you just order a general charge you will win, worked at Waterloo. You'll take huge losses yes but it will be a win.
