Far Cry 2. DRM-free - No Ubisoft req.

Get the offline installer and play this. The World is smaller than Far Cry 3's giant islands but it's still great. I haven't played this in a while but you are in Africa trying to either negotiate a peace deal between 2 factions before chaos breaks loose. You get Malaria, and regularly get a simple sidequest to get Malaria pills because it will make your Character Dizzy. Guns are great. Sounds are great and impactful. You have the G3, Mac-10, Aks, etc. You unlock weapons a lot faster than in FC3. You have a simple character selection screen at the start that -- I assume, gives you a different passive boost during any run you got. It's nothing but a skin selector tbh. It changes your hand skin color that you see holding your guns - that's basically it. Anyways, it's the precursor to Far Cry 3 when you HAD to climb towers to unveil the map. In FC2 you simply have to clear the map of rebel groups. There's desert regions, rocky cliffside clearings, dense jungle areas, rivers with jungle trees dangling above, small african villages, typical firefights in the distance you'll run into. You have safezones where you spend ingame money on new guns and upgrades. It "found itself", or its identity, in Far Cry 2. Far Cry 1 is much simpler of an FPS in hindsight.

Insane for the time, still good today

game engine old as heck so a mod to fix up the game and all the jazz is essential and make the QoL changes to objectively improve the game. or a framerate cap to 60-90 is the bare minimum (unless you want to open up a console and do it yourself every time you speak with someone). you are probably going to need an edit on a config file for the mouse sensitivity, but not too bad compared to other games and definitely not even close to janky. game environments are great , but you might get bored driving the same roads. guns still feel great, sounds are punchy and the wind is blowing. grass burns nice and warm. progression can be satisfying. difficulty can be either too easy or too hard depending on your selection and situation. turns out npc's have big variety of dialogue depending on what you do or your reputation or which ones you get to talk to or die, so it's a bit of a waste that you wont realize it until your 7th run. second part of the game can be a touch tiring for young folk so if you want the savanna experience first half of the game is enough. it's not quite stalker or metro but immersion is good.

Seemed fun, couldn't get far.

I wanted to try more of this game, as I am coming from being a bit of a big fan of Far Cry 4. But at least on Windows 11, this was a borderline unplayable game at best and very bad at worst. This game starts out with quite a lengthy and unskippable taxi cutscene. First playthrough and I ended up getting stuck in a room and unable to move past one of the characters. Restarting over and over again had me still stuck in that room. Then I restarted the whole game from the very beginning, and ended up with a different game breaking bug where the game froze at me getting health and wouldn't let me progress or get off that screen even after I got more health. This has to be some sort of game breaking error, as everything else seems to run fine with no control issues at all.

awesome game, but buggy as hell

Found a lot of bugs and glitches in this version compared to the xbox360 version I played back in the day. Apart from that one of the best Far Cry I ever played.

Boring boring boring.

The game has some cool weapons and a few good ideas. You can choose how you take out a target. You can use stealth and sniper rifles or go in guns blazing. You get a flame thrower. I love flame throwers. But there is very little to do and very little content. There is a huge empty world and you have to drive from one end of this world to the other. Sometimes some enemies pop up and you have to kill them. But the AI is terrible and they are just a nuisance. They are easily dispatched. Then you go back to driving. Sometimes the game makes you drive 10 minutes to get a mission. Then the mission sends you on another 10 minute drive. So you can spend 20 minutes between missions just driving back and forth, back and forth. The missions are boring. To unlock weapons you have to do a mission for the weapon dealers. That mission is always to drive somewhere and shoot a truck with a rocket launcher. So you drive for 10 minutes or so. Get out of your car. Shoot truck. Drive back for 10 minutes. There are also a ton of annoying animations that you can't skip. Just about anything you do leads to an unskippable animation. Take a pill? Heal yourself? Die? Gun jam? All lead to animations that bring game play to a halt. That's my biggest complaint about this game. Every time you start to play and start having fun, something comes up and makes you stop having fun to do a chore. Like drive on a dirt road for 15 minutes to get some pills because you're sick. Or kill a bunch of easy enemies that won't stop respawning.
