Fallout 2

I've played this game back in the day, but never finished it - unlike Fallout 1, which I've completed several times. Now, I thought it's the perfect time to give it another go (watching the series right now), and it's still a top-notch postapocalyptic RPG! With the unofficial patch, it's totally playable on current hardware, and I didn't run into any bugs or glitches until now (I remember the original version was buggy AF). The game is VERY hard, you'll see the "game over" screen very often, giving you the feeling you're just a puny human on the harsh wasteland. On the other hand, this makes the game kinda linear: while you can free roam on a kinda big map, you're so week that actually you can go in one direction only, and can do very limited things. My other issue is that the quest log is almost non-existent: it makes very limited notes, and often not even making a note of a quest/mission, until you actually do the first step of the given quest, so you either remember what you need to get/do at which place, or you make notes. Nevertheless, it's a superb game even in 2024!

Old and ugly but none the less enjoyable. Both Fallout and Fallout 2 still succeed at being complex, funny, engaging games framed around a rich world containing well written characters. It's aged look and older design can be a barrier to entry the patience and time investment pays off. The world of Fallout and Fallout 2 is impressively realized, horrific and funny and offers a considerable challenge. This is the best Fallout game. While the first one was great and New Vegas was amazing in its storytelling, no other game ever achieved this level of good gameplay, good story, good character-building and freedom of choice, depth and immersion. Forget Bethesda. If you like post-apocalyptic games, if you like RPGs and great story, this is the game for you.

This is just the best Fallout game. The humor, the story, the scenario. Everything is perfect. And if not, than just add a mod or two.

What I am about to say some may consider blasphemy. I liked Fallout 2 better than the original. 1) The storyline and main enemy were nearly as good as the original. 2) The world was much bigger with more to do. 3) Better user interface in regard to purchasing/selling items and inventory. 4) Better companion interface. 5) More weapons and armor. Like Advanced Power Armor and the M 72 Gauss Rifle. Fallout 2 did an excellent job building on the original, both in the storyline and using/improving upon the same game-engine. The only real down-side to FO2 was it starts off slow, real SLOW. However, once you are over that it gets good, really quick. Also, there was less voice acting, but big deal. They had limited time in development from what I understand. On a side note, FO2 has more humor and is less bleak than the original, in my opinion at least. The world seems to be coming slowly back to life and there are more settlements, which is only logical as 80 years have past. Whether this is good or not depends on your point of view. I personally liked these aspects. FO2 also was a tad more forgiving in regard to ammunition management. I believe the merchants restocked more often. And.......you get a car.......which is really great! In conclusion, if you like the original you should like FO2 as well. Nothing is perfect but I really enjoyed both games. Thanks GOG!
