Expeditions: Rome

If you've played previous titles (you should, they're great - even with Conquistador showing its age) this game will swipe you off your feet. The story is intense, with lovable characters (quality VA work in there for all the non-MC text), and important decisions (multiple endings), accompanied by amazing visuals, great (familiar but improved) turn-based tactical combat, map encounters, and some army & camp management (though I do recommend turning "Pacification Missions" off, as they don't bring anything substantial to the table, imho). There are a lot of fun references, and near-historic "accuracy". The team really did put a lot of effort into the research/preparations and it shows in the quality of the experience. Most of all I was first surprised by the Latin pronunciations in the game. Being well familiar with German and Italian (and to some, English) Latin, this voiceover brought a nice air of freshness with it. The combat itself is fun, and with proper tactics (and a sprinkle of luck) you may turn around any "unfair" encounter. It's saddening the devs decided to pursue 'different' endeavours, but in my book this is their well deserved Magnum Opus.

I played it all the way through. A couple bugs but nothing critical. My main complaint is that it is too long. There are 3 campaigns, Asia, Egypt, Gaul. They all play the same way so it gets boring. 2 campaigns would have been enough.

I played for about two hours expecting to be drawn in to this world and game, but I just couldn't. The characters are bland and unlikeable which hinders the whole role-playing aspect moot. The world building aspect seems like a grand strategy but I doubt that I'll every play that long. I get it, it's not a game for everyone, and I would never want to dissuade fans of this series or this genre, but do yourself a favor and buy from a storefront that allows refunds just in case it is not your cup of tea either.

A very good game for lovers of tactical combat games.

A little light on the story and the tactical map does make the game a little overlong but the battles are simply chef's kiss!
