This game is brilliant, very simple, action packed, focused in great mechanics. I love it, very classic approach which is possitive for me.
(it doesn't have unnecessary side quests that fills hours of emptiness and bores you to death like many nowadays games and it's another positive point)

played on Game Pass, so if you have that recommend trying it there before buying here. for a little context i'm a fan of Souls games.
the story concept, though over-done these days, is very well executed here. solid VA and art direction is bang on point for the material. uses the typical 'walk around taking in the environment and story while battles are carried out in a closed off area' ethos. the first 10 hours of the game is peak fun after the tutorial section is over. the weapons are just spectacular to use, and the dodge mechanics let you dance around the enemy while picking apart with ranged and melee, thanks also to a solid balance of enemy (which are simply awesome in design and mechanics) where you can flex all your moves. the upgrades are excellent too, but they can make the game much harder if you don't pick correctly early on. the lore collecting in frequented locations was a sore point for me, as you are forced to re-explore the areas everytime you enter them due to lore pieces spawning at different points in story progression.
but then gameplay hits that mark when it feels like the game was rushed more and more as it progresses. the combination of enemies (and boss mechanics) gets to a point where it becomes just a soul draining dodge spam, with your stronger attacks timed completely out of the equation. you realise ranged enemies can not only shoot through each other, but also through structures. there is even a point where your attacks on ranged enemies don't even register until the melee units have been beaten first. 14 hours in, i wanted to play something else.
ultimately an absolute corker of a concept with gameplay that manages to fall from outstanding fun halfway through to irritatingly boring.
Initially I found it a bit hard and complicated to get all these combos down, and I also found the fights rather repetitive, but after having it played half way through, I really enjoy the fights now as the variety with which you employ the weapons makes it more interesting. So I find myself coming back for more!
Story is Ok, graphics is good.
I bought it at 15 bucks and they are worth it in my opinion. I wouldn't say its worth a 50, maybe 20-25 would do it.
First off, the core of the gameplay, which is the combat, is absolutely excellent. Extremely fast, brutal and unforgiving on the hardest difficulty. Dodges, blocks, dashes, guns, punches, the game has it all. The sheer amount of weapons and tools available to you to win over the vampire hordes in the game's 16 levels is staggering. You start off with a basic arsenal but constantly keep finding new toys as you play through the campaign and end up packing so much firepower it's actually nuts. Revolver, Rifle, Bombs, Gatling, Flamethrower, superpowered vampire slaying gauntlet and more. You name it, the game has it. Along with perk points, weapon upgrades, the whole package. If you are just looking for mindless 3rd person chaos, look no further.
But once you leave the combat, that is where the weaker sides of the game come in. First, the levels are extremely linear and scripted. This helps keep the game flow, but the level design overall is quite simplistic. Basically just there to sprinkle collectibles into the occasional "secret" areas and to convey you to the next fight. I use the word "secret" loosely, because secrets in this game mostly consist of guessing the "wrong" path. If you follow the main path, chances are you will not be able to backtrack to explore the branches you missed. The levels are full of "point of no return" traversal actions so you better get everything on the first go. Missing anything means having to replay the entire level if you want the get the collectibles/money you missed. You can't just choose the checkpoint from which you want to start. This flows into another gripe, which is the saving. The game has just one save slot and saves pretty much constantly. So loading an earlier save is also not an option.
There was also one annoying bug where the character got stuck after opening a chest, numerous times, forcing a reload.
But as said, the core of the game is excellent. An easy 8.5/10 and can definitely recommend. Wouldn't mind a sequel.
Evil West seems like a mix of God of War and Doom. Like God of War there is a cohesive story line you play through, chests and bags of gold give you the resources to upgrade and unlock some perks, enemies drop heals on defeat or weak point hits, and while weapons need to to recharge, there is no to craft or pick up ammo. Like Doom there are lore pages to pickup, a mix of different guns you need to swap between to be effective, bloody finishers, and some gory environments.
The writing was fun, and the graphics looked good.
While the mix of God of War and Doom mechanics can work well, it can also be a bit overdone. Swarms can inhibit the weak point targeting, there seems to be an over use of enemies that can heal tanks with impunity (like Ghaul), and enemies are a bit spongy with even minions requiring multiple hits or combos to kill, even on story mode difficulty.
While the graphics look good, they are also very demanding at the upper settings. Even on a modern 20 GB 7900 XT the epic graphics preset can push the card over 100 C at times. Also most will likely want to load the game from a SSD- a business grade Segate Exos HDD and 128 GB RAM worked, but it could still take some time to load.
The game ran fine on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS through Heroic using WINE GE Latest. No crashes or freezing, generally smooth.
