Great space shooter, bit shy of perfect
Everspace has the best flying experience since Descent for me. It has the same truly 3D, fluent and physical feeling and the shooting feels both skillful and hectic in a good way. Everspace controls really nicely using mouse and keyboard, I haven't missed using a stick at all (even though I have one sitting right here). The game is simple, thanks to simplifying design choices like not requiring special weapons for mining, providing a single shop interface for trades, a straightforward looting mechanism, etc. That's good, but also a bit repetitive after many runs. I realise this is a roguelike and some repetition is to be expected, but a good roguelike allows the player to more quickly advance to the hard parts, where Everspace makes you go through the motions of the first one or two sectors over and over, without really capitalising on progress or introducing worthwhile mechanisms to move ahead quicker. The selection of ships and the fact that they don't really stand apart is a bit meager too. I felt little need to leave the ship I started out in, since it's actually pretty good. And unlocking the rest felt like more of a chore than an achievement. But the upgrades and mechanism for progression of the ship are original and the progress, though small, is noticeable. I only played with Encounters. I imagine the game would be a bit empty without them. In fact, I think it's still pretty light on content other than space fights. But if space fights are your thing, you could do worse than Everspace.
