An epic adventure ahead of his time

I finished Enclave on the Xbox many years ago, an impressive feat that felt like climbing a mountain. The game difficulty is not for the faint of heart: even at medium the game is very, very demanding. But the variety of scenarios, characters, weapons, the chance to replay any of the beaten levels, the evil campaign are really rewarding. Kudos to the graphics, top notch even today.

A real gem

Even in 2010 I still tell people this is one of my favorite games of all time... it just oozes with style and atmosphere. Gameplay may feel a bit basic now, but still its a great game to romp through and find all the pots of gold.

Enclave - a worthy (TPS)(FPS) gem

Hi, Enclave, is a impressive hack & slash title, at any time switch between (FPS)+(TPS) with a click of a key/button. Good options available, including (on/off) damage indication. Has configurable keys, like - movements, jump, crouch, potion, torch + more. High graphics available. Weapons like - swords, shields, crossbows, magical staffs, daggers, axes, bows, hammers, poison arrows + more. Collect gold pieces to choose high value weaponry to take with you on missions. Full 360 degrees horizontal rotations + full 180 degrees vertical rotations, making it excellent. New characters are awarded and and then you can choose a character to play a level. Enemies like - goblins, liches, sorceresses, assassins + more. Enter - dungeon castle like areas, temple, towns, lava wasteland, harbor + more. Has NPC's voice speeches, sound effects, eerie music. Overall a classic hack & slash gem, better than expected, however it may be wise to choose easy setting before starting. Excellent (TPS)(FPS). YxDDVxY

Sheer fun - Ignore the old reviews

Although a GoG title, Enclave isn't so old, it comes from the XBox era with XBox graphics and the screenshots here at GoG don't do it justice - it looks much better when you have it actually running. If you're looking for another Two Worlds or Gothic, Enclave won't suffice. The game is broken into average levels and has more of a game play feel to it like an old ID software game. Even though I was initially looking for something more open-ended this game turned out to be a nice surprise and far better than I had expected after reading old reviews. Simply put the game boasts awesome level designs and the artificial intelligence of the enemy is smart enough to lure them into stupid things like separating themselves from a pack so you can get them alone. As any good game, Enclave boasts and old school challenge where in you'll probably find yourself having to attempt a level several times through trial and error pattern learning. Don't get me wrong, the challenge is what makes this game fun and it isn't too hardcore as a resurrection point can be found half way through every level. There is a reasonable sized selection of characters to unlock and take through every level but you will find the Knight to be the most practical throughout the entire game as he storms through everything like a juggernaut tank. The other characters are fun to play as well but bring about more of a survival challenge as they are more frail and you have to approach each level from a sneak-around and attack from a distance stance. Leveling up is simply done through acquired gold. Gold is never spent permanently but the amount that you have defines what type of equipment you can start each level with so say that, so far, I've found 1000 gold - at the start of each level I will be able to purchase a 1000 worth of equipment. This encourages the player to replay completed levels in hunt for secret gold stashes. Gold is also awarded from bonus mini-game area challenges and level completion rewards. It may not be the next Gothic but by it's own merits it's and extremely fun, challenging and good-looking game.

Challenging fantasy action

It's a solid and enjoyable game. The fighting mechanics in place are a bit stiff and undynamic, but are pretty functional and reward a composed, patient approach. There's a large variety of different styles of fighting. What you'd normally consider your 'character class' occurs in this through the equipment you choose, and so you may need to play a few levels to unlock your choice of melee, ranged or magic. It doesn't take long and you'll find something you like. But never underestimate the importance of some versatility! You have to be prepared to deal with any kind of enemy somehow. Character strengths improve as you go by unlocking new equipment. However before you can use it, you must have enough money to equip it. Your budget for each level's equipment comes from gold you collected in all prior levels. So you can give yourself a boost by searching earlier levels more thoroughly, and coming back later better equipped. Affording good equipment will prove essential later in this game, as it's very tough. Many levels can be like endurance tests. If you enjoy a challenge, you'll find one in Enclave. Though I should warn you, there's also a few deathtraps which you couldn't possibly guess. They're not very common, but there's a few of them. There's no shortage of variety in the game. Levels occur in very different environments, taking you to some spectacular landscapes and structures. And if that's not enough variety for you, there's a second campaign where you play on the evil side, giving you a second perspective on the conflict. Definitely an enjoyable game for me, and an easy recommendation at the humble price GoG asks.
