Decent, if clunky, old RPG
I never played this game when I was younger, so I don't have any specific nostalgia for it, but I suppose I played a number of similar games so I have some indirectly. But, once I got used to the controls and how to approach combat, I enjoyed Strahd's Possession. Even late in the game, when I came across some tough enemies that stopped my progress, I kept wanting to go back and try different strategies to get around them, which I eventually did. It's clunky, slow, and takes some getting used too, but it can be fairly enjoyable. I wish combat was a little slower. The game doesn't give you a lot of time to react and use spells or try to heal. So it mostly comes down to following whatever strategy you have decided on and following it and hoping it works out. A few suggestions for anyone else looking to try this game. 1. As some other reviewers have said, have a Cleric. But, I say less for healing and more for Turn Undead, which causes undead to run and spin around. It is extremely useful in dealing with some more powerful enemies and enemies with cruel abilities like drain level. 2. Use "Free Mouse Movement", where you move "smoothly" around, not "Step Movement", where your characters snap from square to square like on a grid and turn 90 degrees. There were place I couldn't get to because step wouldn't allow me to move between objects. And, combat is more difficult because enemies also move using "Step Movement" and dart around faster, and it's easy to turn or move around when trying to click on them for combat and get disoriented. 3. Don't be afraid to use the cluebooks. Even it it's just to check after you finish a dungeon to see if you missed anything. Some things are very difficult to find, including hidden buttons you need to find, and who has the time to run around for hours looking in every nook and cranny. But, be aware there is a hidden button in a later dungeon, that you need to complete it, that isn't listed. 4. Don't be afraid to abuse saves. A few fights can go bad very quickly, and some enemies can do terrible things like drain levels or your max health. Read the manual for the more troublesome enemies and save a lot and use Turn Undead when facing them. 5. Mages learn spells by copying scrolls into their spellbook. But, some spells are of high enough level you'll never get spell points to use them. They won't be a huge game changer, but you'll gain a lot more from just using 5th or 6th levels scrolls then learning the spell to use later, which will never happen. Also, spells like detect magic and identify are very useful. You should start using them earlier then I did. Overall, not a bad game. It just has the usual jank you get from 90's adaptations of tabletop RPGs, and requires the player to adapt and make some concessions. Not for everyone though. I'm kind of looking forward to playing Stone Prophet.
