Love this editon

I played Doom 3 back it the day (non BFG edition) and really did love playing it. I guess it's been so long since I've played that I can't really tell much difference between the original and the BFG edition. The differences I can identify are ones I like. The menu is different from what I remember but I like it. The Xbox One controller support is awesome and getting to use the flashlight while shooting, for me, is a welcomed change. I finished the game this morning and was completely satisfied with the gameplay. I actually liked playing this version better than the original. As one reviewer commented, there did seem to be more ammo drops than what I remember from the original. That's fine with me, though! There was one thing I wasn't crazy about, though. Unless I overlooked how to skip cutscenes, I didn't like not having the option to skip. This game is linear. You battle through the story, cautiously looking around corners while listening for sounds which indicate monsters could be nearby. I love it. Scary? No, but there are still some surprise elements throughout the game which will make you fire off some rounds at air. Well, for me anyway. If you have played Doom 3 before, you know what to expect. If you haven't played Doom 3 before and are looking for a decent shooter, this might hit the spot for you. I purchased a copy for $9.99 on sale and do not regret it all. The reviews for this edition are mixed but if you are considering buying this game, you have to remember these reviews are personal opinions. Is this game good because I believe it is a good game? Of course not. It is completely up to the individual who is playing to decide if a game is good or if it's a stinker. That being said, however, if there are 50 out of 50 bad reviews for a game, it probably is a bad game. I still use reviews, from time to time, to help determine if I would like to play the game but I normally do not solely judge on reviews alone. YouTube gameplay videos are what I use the most to determine if I would like to play a game. I gave this game a 4 star rating because, to me, although it is definitely worth playing more than once and is fun, I can't say it is one of my all-time favorites.

What a gem! It´s not perfect (it is outdated), but to give that feeling of blasting "people" when you´re in that day, it is just brilliant. Very decent graphics, a "story" and the trigger. Very GOOD

Bad Version

First off all I own the original uncut version of Doom3 on CD, so I dont own the Doom3 BFG. Infos to run most ID Tech Games are down at the end. The original Doom3 was made for pc and can run Mods. I dont remember many graphical differences but one of them is the texture qualitiy. This game is based on the xbox version ported to the 360 and then to pc. Some parts of the BFG version wont be ideal. I red in the GOG reviews that the lighting engine got worse. Mods are not easy to install on the BFG. Guess the texture mods are the easiest, because it is just replacing... About the game: You are a marine send to Mars to be a guard. With you on board of the ship that flew you to Mars were 2 important persons that representatives of a governmental organisation or something like that.... After some things hell breaks out..... The first part of the game is great and everything feels new. Later in the 2/3 or 2/4 the game gets a little bit dull. The start of the game is in the main facillity with living quarters... later you mainly see working areas. My problem with it is the same as in Half Life 1 -> The world is a little bit too compact. I want to see more how they live or lived after everything went wrong. Modding / Setting the game up for modern PCs in generell Add this line in the TARGET area of the shortcut (dont know if its called doom.exe) Target is: "C:Program Files (x86)ActivisionDoom3BFGDoom.exe" add one space after Doom.exe + outside " and it should look like "C:Program Files (x86)ActivisionDoom3BFGDoom.exe" +r_mode "-1" +r_customwidth "1920" +r_customheight "1080" +cg_fov "90" +vid_restart +r_mode "-1" forces the resolution +r_customwidth "1920" is the x resolution aka horizontal +r_customheight "1080" is the y resolution aka vertical +cg_fov "90" is the fov aka field of fiev - many console games have 60 and makes many people motion sick I recomment 80 to 120. Most gamers use 90 +r_fullscreen 1 (0=off) +vid_restart (forces fullscreen as far as I know)

Not for everyone - but for me!

This game is very different from the original Doom games and Doom 2016. Needless to say, there was a lot of controversy already when it originally released in 2004 - and the changes the BFG Edition brought in 2012 did not help this situation. First the game was too dark and being forced to switch to the flashlight was a stupid mechanic, now it's the other way around, apparently :-) Anyways, I loved both Doom 2016 as well as Doom 3 (and this BFG Edition), though for very different reasons. D3 focuses much more on delivering a scary atmosphere. Everything is dark and eerie and claustrophic. You not so much fight the horrifying demons as you fight with your sheer uneasyness of being trapped in this world. I want to stress that I normally don't play "horror" games. D3 gives you the tools to survive and fight back - but it does not hand-hold you. I feel many of the original issues with the BFG Edition have been fixed in the meantime. You can enable the console, you can adjust FOV, you can disable auto-saving. Even zoom is still available via console/config files. And having the fps cap raised from 60 to 120 was a godsend to me. And I do appreciate the changes in visuals and sound. That said, they could have done a better job in parts, or at least allowed for more options.

DOOM3 lite (light?)

DOOM3 and it's expansions could have been a system shock clone. They do dark and scary well; the lighting and shadows provide a frightening atmosphere. The space colony's very extensive dark deserted and claustrophobic corridors, crawling with demons and zombiefied humans are reminiscent of the ss series space station/space ship. On the otherhand, there is not anywhere near the interaction, depth and sophistication of the ss series. The whole evil coterie returns, but instead of the hordes, you're ambushed at every opportunity by usually a few at a time. It's still an action game at heart, albeit a frightening one. Survival horror it's not. There's plenty of guns and ammo to deal with the denizens of doom. The production values are very high, & although it is a typical old school shooter, it feels like a real industrial base in a remore, hostile location. The two expansions take place in the same location and similar environments to DOOM3; pretty much extensions of the first game. RoE brings the story to a close and introduces a bit more depth and variety to the gameplay. It is however easier than the first game. The lost missions is far more balls-to-the wall than RoE and DOOM3. Monsters spawn often and everywhere. Armour, ammo & health pickups are less numerous than in both preceding games, although there is still more than enough. Be prepared for many jump-scares and some frantic multiple-enemy encounters. The original Doom3 is darker and far more scarier, exacerbated by having to switch between weapon and flashlight. BFG is definitely lighter, has more pickups, enables simultaneous weapon and flashlight use. No doubt it was altered to appeal to a more mainstream audience. If you want the full original experience, get the original game or play with settings and install mods to get BFG to approach the original look, feel and gameplay.On the other hand, BFG contains a hell (ahem) of a lot of value, upgraded graphics and is the most accessible DOOM3.
