Don't Starve

many negative reviews i've seen point towards the nonintuitive gameplay, crafting system etc. Obviously these people didn't read anything before buying. It was always the point of Don't Starve, that you get thrown into a strange world that wants to kill you, a world that has more or less completely different laws of nature (though one has to keep it slightly in line with ours to not look random), which the protagonist and therefore the player doesn't know until figuring it out, of course it gets boring to do so with consulting the wiki every time instead of experimenting oneself. You can easily sink hundreds of hours into it (i would know i've done it), though not likely in a single world, especially with mods, it has room for many improvements though, which is why i would give it a rating of 4/5. BUT I bought it directly from Klei some years ago because i didn't want to use Steam (and they had not gotten it onto GOG yet at that time), I paid fullprize not only for the base game but the DLC too, i filed bug reports, was an active member of the community for a while (until other games got me away from it). Now I wanted to download it again from my account on Klei's website but they don't have the dowload section anymore, I asked Klei what I should do now, and they more or less said: buy it again on Steam.

Mods can fix many game's flaws, yet mods installation is cumbersome (in-game links lead either to steam or klei forums requiring separate accounts registration).

Don't Starve is a curious little game that will frustrate you and keep you coming back for more. On sale it's worth the purchase, but it's a small game that is really just a good time waster in my opinion. It doesn't really have the staying power I feel it needs to be a large part of your gaming library. Waiting for a raid in another game? fire this up and burn a little time! They make no excuses for the lack of help you get, and the unknown is really what draws you in. You have some gauges that show you how you're doing, and about what time of day it is, but you really have no idea just how long before you'll need to eat, or when you'll need more fire wood. After a couple days you start to understand just how much resources you'll need, and once you have a grasp on that you'll want to assemble things and come up with weapons and structures that will help you out. If you die, you start all over again... so it's best to take it slow, not adventure very far and get a handle on the basics, and for gods sake... Don't Starve!!

Firstly, this game is AMAZING! Living each day is a special privilege as you battle to survive through the worst nightmares of Tim Burton and prehistoric man. Just when you have got your base camp in some form of order (a la minecraft) BAM! You're dead! Was it the hounds chasing you in the middle of the night? Was it the giant tree that grabbed you as you searched for firewood? Was it gradually starving during the harsh winter? No, this time it was when your nightmares became flesh and made a snack out of you. This game is harsh, this game is dark and this game with make you scream when you realize you forgot to chop enough wood to make a fire that night. You don't get a safety net for stupid mistakes. If you are the kind of person who reloads after every mistake, this game is not for you. This game is about learning from your mistakes the harsh way, but to use that knowledge to do better next time. If you can't get past day 4, start learning what you did wrong. If you are finding it too easy at day 100, try out Adventure mode or leave your current world for the next, harsher one. Enjoy :P
