Good but very overrated

I'm a story and character driven gamer. Were I made to chose, I'd rather a game's narrative was about the characters and how they feel about the world rather than how they're gonna save it and acquire the necessary power and wield said power oooooh. Sadly, the later is a good summary of DOS2. Many things gave me flashbacks to Neverwinter Nights 2 (Mask of the betrayer included) and some Dragon Age : Origins, but in a way that made DOS2 feel lacking in comparison. It's very much on the beaten path. You are a sourcerer, someone who has Special Powers - because of which you are Oppressed. You Will Rise To The Occasion And Thrive Through Adversity. You (or one of your pals) Are A Chosen One. It's a good game. Though missing Divinity : Ego Draconis' quirky humor (last Larian game I played), it's entertaining, and it's been sucking way too many hours of my time. The fights are a bit too challenging at first but once you get the hang of them they become FUN. The graphics are pretty and collorful, the special effects are cool. I just sure wish the plot had been held to similar standards.

Can't be bothered

I like the game's technical side, i.e. the combat (elemental interactions, different ways to use spells) but the game genuinely bored me into dropping it. Maybe it's just the beggining, as I haven't escaped the prison yet, but I genuinely cannot force myself to even try. There's just an overwhelming lack of reason to do anything beside for "it's a game you bought so do quests". I know there is a plot going on somewhere in the background, but it is not at all woven into the beggining narrative. The game just fails to tell me why I should bother playing it. So if YOU want to play the game, you'll probably enjoy it. But it you want the game engage you, you'll probably be bored to tears like I was.

Great game

One of two indie games in the history of ever to actually be good enough to warrent a purchase. Highly recommended.

One of the most inventive and fun RPGs

Larian Studios have been doing Divinity series for 16 years now and if anything, I cannot call any of their games “boring”. But despite all of these creative and fun ideas, every single game they’ve made felt clunky, not particularly good at anything it tried to be and somewhat half-baked. I did enjoy my time with Divine and Divinity 2 back in the day, but none of the other games, including Original Sin, could get me interested for longer than a few hours, either because they were boring, or plot was terrible, or something else, or all of the above. Original Sin 2 feels like a mix of ideas Larian had before, except this time done properly. All the best elements from Original Sin return, the combat system is still solid, the absolutely amazing environmental effects system is still a joy. The game exploration is now extremely fun and seems to come naturally because the game is very smart about directing you where you need to go without feeling too restrictive but also without just hitting you in the face with a high level monster out of nowhere.And this might be the very first time Larian has made a genuinely well written game. Not just full of cool ideas and concepts, but one that is actually fun to follow. And somehow without losing the quirkiness of Rivellon. Unfortunately the game essentially falls apart in the last quarter of the game. It has about 15 unnecessary hours of absolute worst ideas and encounters in the entire game. The story more or less falls apart and becomes a confused mess, almost every fight has some terrible gimmick attached to it. But… despite the flaws, despite the terrible closing hours of the game and some of the elements that remained broken and silly even in the Definitive Edition, Divinity: Original Sin 2 is an amazing game. It’s most definitely the best Divinity game in the series so far and one of the very best RPGs I’ve played in recent years. And people who want to play coop will probably enjoy it even more than I did.

First one was better

Despite some improvements over the first game the sequel is tepid, tangled mess. Not having the source skill for the majority of the first map was a clear indicition of the devs falling out of the stupid tree and sustaining a large enough hit just once for it to affect (sour) the game for me. It always felt like an uphill slog that just once needed to chill out and not be faced with a laundry list of places to go and people to murder just to get X so you can now Y. Don't get me wrong there are some good ideas such as the speaking the ghost skill and having all the dialogue voiced for them but it comes after what feels like a 10 mile march in the rain beside Mr Naggy who constantly reminds you that you've got lots more sub-quests to do. And then having acquired said skill there's not an immediate thrill in using it when casting storm spell then lightning is more thrilling because you watch live people jiggle instead of dead ones moping, I mean floating and you've been able to do that since pretty much the start of the game. On the item/crafting side there is far too much crap and nothing to do with it and inventory management is no longer charming or desirable it's now a failure of restricting scope. Although I did like the power-skill item gems that you can put into equipment when you add this with said awful inventory management (or lack of) levelling up was no longer rewarding in a click a skill to make a better way but more of a tedious in a hunt under the bed for the thing to combine with the thing in the sock draw to make shield better. I've played this game through twice (second run was as the undead man whose bucket on head joke isn't funny when it hinders your combat options and only really comes into his own once you get a face-transplant thing WAAAAAAAAY too late in the game). I will probably return to it again in a couple of years but for the moment I really want something with less fragmentation in terms of maps and more in terms of focused gameplay.
