Help my necktie is talking to me AGAIN

Disco Elysium is a murder mystery… INLAND EMPIRE: What mystery? We already know WHO did it! It was COMUNISM. LOGIC: Don’t listen to him, this is about solving a case. ELECTROCHEMISTRY: and consuming all types of happy and fulfilling substances that will make you a super mega ultra Superstarcop. HORRIFIC NECKTIE: Yess!! Brataaan! That what *I like to hear! Quick get a shot of that whiskey! VOLITION: NO! Don’t do that, you can collect yourself, be better. ESPRIT DE CORPS: You wouldn’t want to disappoint someone. As I was saying, it’s a beautiful story that has you play as… What was the name? Tequila Something right? Yeah, that sounds about right. Anyways it’s sometimes sad and gloomy. Most of the time it’s crazy and surreal. But surprisingly, it’s a hopeful and very retrospective experience. With a very diverse and rich cast of characters you will start to appreciate the longer you deal with them. Honestly, it’s funny how some people really try make their own ideology and politics work in this game. But the reality is that it was made by some communists who had a dream to build 0.000005% of communism by developing a game. It has a funny, insightful and interesting approach to representing itself. I admit I’m a huge Liberal (like democratic norms, liberal rights, etc) and I would be lying if I said a like communist that much, but this journey felt really magical and got me to connect with some higher being called COMUNISM. INLAND EMPIRE: What is this Comunism? Could it be a new species to uncover? Or maybe a lost City to discover in the depths of sweaty and dark basements where unemployed hermits dwell? HALF LIGHT: Is this Comunicard watching us? Prepare to fight! Your life depends on it! VOLITION: Stay on topic. Stay off of the drugs and please… don’t listen to them. Maybe take a day off. Fantastic Detective CRPG

+Deliciously brilliant story telling +Excellent use of the generic amnesic plot line to allow you rebuild a completely broken character +Exhibits a great range of emotions. This game really shows the damage depression can have as well as laugh at most of the absurdities thoughts your character can have -Can be overtly wordy in places. Throwing words that have no meaning at you. -Weak ending although I feel this was intended -Certain roll checks can block progression in certain quest lines Overview: Disco Elysium is a fantastically written CRPG with an excellent set of characters and brilliant use of amnesia to build a character to your fancy. The world is brilliantly written and filled with a great variety of characters with complex thoughts and there own personal agendas. The plot slowly unfolds get more and more complex as domino effect takes place where it ultimately peters out in the end but still never the less is a great romp and does not take away from the experience. This game is well worth a play.

Witty but largely lacking in gameplay

This is an extremely dialogue-heavy choose-your-own-adventure-game with LITE RPG elements. The gameplay mainly consists of a point system that the player allocates to fulfill various traits which alter the success of dialogue and choices that the character makes. The world is a bit bizarre and is heavily preoccupied with political overtones that consist of choosing between liberal and conservative stances. Oftentimes, you will have to return to a situation to pass a skill check that you would not have previously. The writing, although lengthy, is funny and I genuinely laughed out loud at a few moments. The main problem for me is that it is more graphic novel than it is game at times. It wouldve been nice to feel like an active participant in the world rather than a driver that steers a wheel one direction or the other. It also couldve done with some action scenes that break up the monotony of the game after a few hours. Overall, the gameplay is too simple to really be considered a game. The RPG lite qualities ultimately just become the framework in which you endlessly maneuver through dialogue choices. Eventually I lost interest after about 5 hours once I understood the peak of the gaming experience in Disco Elysium.
