Diablo + Hellfire

Diablo with Hellfire. Well done GOG. Thisis going to be fun. I remember this game wheni t first came out. Still have the box and disk. If you liked diablo you will like this game. Lotta fun and worth playing more than once, just to sample the different classes. Give this a go. You will not be disappointed.

This game was an insta-buy from the first sight. But ever since I bought it I was wondering if my dreams would come true and the Hellfire expansion be added to it. I even asked on several resources of such possibility. "No, there will never be such a thing, because Hellfire is made by another studio" were answers to that. Lo and Behold! My dreams literally came true. I can not thank enough all who are responsible for that, you have made my life whole lot happier! P.S. I did not write any word about the game itself, but come on! It is Diablo 1, do I need to say anything more?

Thank you, GOG for preserving this classic game. It runs perfectly on my modern OS (Win7). The free addition of Hellfire is a welcome bonus and it is my reason to finally write this review. If you want to experience Diablo 1 again then buy this version.

I really think that in its time, Diablo was huge, surreal, a true milestone in the industry, but without the nostalgia factor it's really hard to love it : Your character moves really slowly and despite the satisfaction in destroying skeletons and demons by dozen every click feels tedious. Yet, the maze-like structure of dungeons doesn't repel me, I do like to get lost in the church with the discreet and quite glooming music in the background with a few screams here and there. Soundtrack and atmosphere wise, it may be among the very best any hack 'n' slash have to offer, sadly graphics aged poorly, like really poorly despite higer res support and the game is still 4:3 in fullscreen even, it's just a big mash of pixels. I don't think it's a lazy port, it's just half of a remake, but can't deny it's playable. Auto-saves every time you move to a new floor (at least) would have been nice, as I've got killed by skeletons that became weirdly over-powered and managed to evade every hit by the third floor in the church and have to restart it all, it already took me so long to get there, only to restart, at the begining. Maybe I'm too young for the first Diablo (My first H&S game was X-Men Legends 2 on PS2) which makes me unable to fully enjoy this. Hell I've played my fair share of Diablo 3 and didn't enjoy it that much neither. So to players under 30 I recommend instead : Grim Dawn, Titan Quest or Sacred 2. But don't hesitate to check this game out if the discovery of the Hack 'n' Slash genre is really what you're after.

Diablo 1 pioneered the Action RPG. Sure it may not look as pretty by today's standards. But there is an elegant simplicity and pureness to the experience that even Blizzard's own Diablo 3 hasn't quite matched. A large part of what made Diablo and even Diablo 2 so good was that your choices actually mattered when building a character. The ability to respec a character didn't even come until a patch. Even then it was difficult to do so. Your choice of points to allocate to stats and talent points meant something. So how is the classic on modern hardware? GOG have done a bang up job. It plays, looks and feels like Diablo and while not a looker by today's standards? It does look decent on HD displays. It's not a remaster, but rather a slightly enhanced re-release. Is it worth $10? I can't answer that. Everyone places a different value on things. However, once a good game, always a good game and GOG have preserved it quite admirably here and I think the work that they have done justifies the price tag in my opinion.
