Fair to good as is, but it needed more

It's too simplistic, simple as! Too few units and buildings, too basic unit stats/attribs etc. Too small a tech tree. GFX, SFX and music while functional are poor...... even for the year this was released. It looks like a Windows 3.1 game FGS! No diplomacy at all, you are considered permanently "at war" with all the others, though that scenario does fit the game's backstory! Despite it saying it is a feature, "trading" NEVER works, your trades are refused EVERY time, they NEVER trade with you. Many people experience problems running this too. So GOG did not get it working "100%". So be warned if you do decide to get it. That over simplicity is a shame, because the game is good with what it has. The AI does seem quite smart and will give you a run even on easiest AI difficulty settings. It will trounce you on higher settings! Though on maps with oceans, they don't ever seem to build/use ships. So a faction stuck on an island is screwed. Deadlock 2 added a bit more I believe, but almost no-one has even run that broken version GOG peddle AFAIK! Myself included.

Dusty Gem But good!

Deadlock is not best of it's kind. But it's pretty playable. It's an proto-4x turnbased strategy game with huge emphasis on war. There all things that make Deadlock Planetary Conquest one of good or sorta "Not so bad" games. Graphics is nice - small sprites, compacted sites, and "talking heads" of advisors reminiscent those days of dawn of 3d fx era. It's not bad, not bad at all. Sounds and music score is bit eerie. I really like soundscape of cities and wilderness is good. I could use em for some background for my workplace. Gameplay is...well..it lack something. I dunno exacly what - at first glance Deadlock looks good - it have good array of research, nice roster of units and some cool "racical specials" for each of playable race but lack of control in battle, not-so-essential racial "Skills" for some units and some really "awesome but impractical" use of end-game rocket military is kinda small flint in good picture. Also lack of diplomacy or well developed espionage is something that darken picture of "possibly good 4x game" . Espionage is pretty limited, and in diplomacy you can only send messages to opponents or in a friendly note gift em units. No allied victory, no espionage or trade-exchange opportunities composing with kinda uncontrollable combat is making a shot in a knee but Deadlock still stands. Verdict? If you missed game in days of old - try it now. It's pretty simple and good. Sometimes Deadlock show off his nice colors, make some cool moments and make itself enjoyable. I put only 4 stars cause this game really need Multiplayer. AI combatants don't give much of challenge. But due it's age multiplayer been cut sadly from this release.

LAN Game perfection

The AI is shockingly great for a game this old. Also the insult/taunts from other nations are legendary. If you are playing with friends you can also customise these insults which can result in an angry lizard man calling you slurs. Overall a very fun time killer that plays more like a complex board game than a video game.

Amazing game!

I've played a few hundred hours since I was a teenager, found on one of those magazine CDs from the 90s. I remembered it because I always play it back then. Given the turn-based mechanics, this game is relaxed at first, but as it becomes more complex, you can manage resources, position strategically, and even contact the black market for all your needs (but risk being discovered by the public). Regarding the second game (which has some minor improvements), Deadlock 1 has aged better, because its interface uses the Windows windowing system, which leaves the game without stretching. I'm playing it in 1080p on a 27-inch screen and it runs smoothly. Finally, a warning: although the game is also available on Steam, the version there is buggy and will not run properly on Windows 8/10/11, requiring file changes and even then running without music. Meanwhile, the GOG version, in addition to being cheaper, works perfectly as downloaded!

Great Obscure TBS Game

I played this relentlessly in high school and even into college. It has a depth and humour that sadly many modern games only wish they had. If you only ever buy one turn-based strategy game, this is the one to buy.
