Great Idea, One Inconvenient Mechanic

The game has all aspects of a great roguelite:  + Combat is fun - it rewards your experience with the game, different weapons facilitate different combat styles, gear is not only diverse and can synergize into neat builds.  + Roguelite - there is meta progress in the game, where each run makes subsequent runs easier.  + Visually the game is pleasant to look at, sound does the job well of conveying the message about what is happening.  + Cracked walls hiding secret passages, traps and other stuff you would expect.  + Curse corruption mechanic is a good addition, where it changes the game without necessarily making the more curse a bad thing. You have a meter you need to watch, some enemy attacks and advancing in the temple fill it up. Once it does, you get a curse. Each curse has a downside and an upside, e.g. you get more gold but it disappears quickly. However, there are some downsides:  - There is little variety to rooms. Play enough and you have seen everything.  - The variety of secondary gear (relics) means that I rarely change it once I have them all, unless I get a direct upgrade, which doesn't happen often. Once I specialize in something I do not pick even great relics because they do not synergize with my setup. The inconvenient: the Light/Darkness mechanic: It's simple: in darkness you take 50% more damage and do not see threats such as gas clouds, floor traps and similar traps. It's a singular disadvantage, no upsides or stealth to it. To see those you need a source of light. Luckily for you, you carry a torch. Unluckily, using it means you cannot use your weapons. So you light things up on fire: enemies, environment or braziers. Those, however, burn out and you are again in darkness. So you have to drop what you're doing and get busy lighting up stuff, possibly still surrounded by enemies. It boggles my mind what that mechanic was supposed to bring to the table. Whenever you enter a room full of enemies the 1st thing to do is run to light braziers.

Typical rogue-lite with problems

Curse of the Dead Gods seriously confuses me. There are a lot of elements that lend to a good, if kinda standart, rouge-lite action game. Individual floors are small about 2-4 encounters each (not a lot of variety or exploration though). At the end of floor is the main feature (shrine, treasure) and then a door that will lead you to a selection of a next floor and cause corruption (ties to game's curse mechanics). Average floor can take about 5 minutes or so so the runs don't take that long. Art is nice - it sits well with dark and ominous style of game and traps are impactful - harming you and enemies alike so you can cleverly use them to deal a lot of damage. What is the problem then? There are few mechanics that I feel need some tuning: - drops are random and items and weapons can have a lot of different stats and that can lead to a run where you just don't have any synergy. - I am not a fan of the light mechanics - it just slows everything down imo and seems more like a gimmick than anything else. - Curses you get once you accumulate enough corruption don't feel impactful and since you will get cursed anyway and they are random, there is little reason to really worry about them. But what bothered me the most is combat - it just feels off. It fells sluggish and unresponsive at times and often I did not feel like I've got hit cause I made a mistake - I've got hit because my character was in a middle of animation when mob just decided to attack. I think they were trying to go for more slow and methodical combat style rather than flashy fast paced action but it just doesn't work. It's not like I couldn't 'git gud' - I could, but subjectively I always felt like I am wrestling with unwieldy combat system itself more than with enemies. And that's not a good feel to have for your combat game. I am fully aware this is highly subjective but I would advice to carefully watch or test the combat first to see how you feel about it before buying the game.

Excellent action roguelite

I own the Steam version, here's the important part of my review: When the sales pitch is "curse management" it calls to mind the insanely unfair Darkest Dungeon style of curse. Curse of the Dead Gods succeeds in overcoming that hurdle. I never felt that the curses were unfair, and I feel like they match the pace of the game perfectly. Sometimes the double-edged nature of a curse turned things in my favor, so long as I was able to manage its downside. On the surface, combat appears similar to another early access roguelite, Hades. However Curse of the Dead Gods is much more methodical in its pacing. The "Greed Kill" mechanic rewards the player for learning to play aggressively and dodge and parry versus slowly picking off enemies. However, learning to play aggressively requires deliberate action. Haphazard aggression will just leave you out of stamina and unable to perform certain actions, such dodging and attacking with offhand or heavy weapons. Likewise, exploring the temples without regard to their traps can see the player fall victim to spikes, explosions, flames, and more. It's important to utilize the torch.

Indiana Jones as a Rogue-like

A variety of weapons, perks, a main hand, offhand, and a two handed weapon are what make up your arsenal, which could be melee or range based. It uses the darkness in the dungeon as a part of either powering you up or weakening you depending on what build youre going for, same when you are in the light. All the sounds and effects are crunchy and you can see, hear, and feel the impact of your attacks as well as the enemies.

A few DLC's short of a great game

Very well-rounded rogue-like. But as it stands now - a single playthrough is all it can offer. If only it could receive the same level of support and new content as Dead Cells... There are plenty of very-well crafted ideas and mechanics that could be explored further: darkness, curses, traps, layouts, weapons, passives, story & narration The fight mechanics might feel a bit slow at first, but definitely enjoyable and "fair". I had to resort to save-scumming to learn the boss mechanics. And it was plenty of fun nonetheless. Not a single technical probelm as far as i can remember (and thank god it's not Unity)
