This is not made clear on the store page. In order to play the game, the game MAKES you download something called kalypso launcher. You cannot launch the game without this program. This program is designed to show you ads for other games by the same developer, and pushes you really hard to make an online account.
Technically, you don't need an online account, if you keep your eyes open and press the red 'skip' button
Technically, I can unplug my PC from the Internet and avoid the ads
But that defeats the purpose of a DRM free game, right?
Cannot reccommend. This is a pretty blatant disregard for the spirit of GOG's anti-DRM policy, while still technically meeting the absolute barest minimum
I just finished the story of the game, after having it bought during a sale some weeks ago. I must say, what a nice game this is. The story is great, and drags you into it. The characters all have their little quirks and their conversations are quite amusing at times.
The gameplay itself feels alot like Commandos in that you spend your time avoiding the view arcs of the guards. Being spotted usually means reload (if you're a perfectionist like me), but there are ways around it if you want. The learning curve is perfect and while the later missions are quite tough at times, it never becomes frustrating.
Replayability is great as well, as you unlock standalone challenges (that I have yet to start with). And each level can be replayed with different character combinations, making the same level quite different due to the difference in skills of the characters.
All in all, a gem of a game, and great value for money, especially if you buy it during a sale. I didn't encounter any bug at all and the game feels solid and very well made.
I totally agree with the former review, the Grey-area DRM called Kalypso Launcher. Response of GOG.com support is just 'it's not a DRM' , well it is, it is a DRM that you don't need to log on to. Even with advertisement on a payed game, terrible! Very dissapointed in GOG.com, will look at other platforms from now on. DRM-free seems a joke to GOG.com, it seems they use the letter of the rule rather than look at the spirit of the claim of DRM-free games.
I especially went to GOG.com to get it DRM-free, only to discover the don't look at the spirit of the DRM-free games policy.
I love this game. Beside silly haircuts, clothes and gadgets, the story revolves around moon-stones, earthquake-inducing LASERS and such things. It all fits quite neatly in the 1970s jive, when everything was over-the-top. Dialogues are quite funny too: "Police got new teletyping machines that can send a whole printed page thousands of miles away in just TWO minutes!" :D
Gameplay is fun, and that's what matters. Of course there are many switches in each level - it's a puzzle game! But there are many different ways to solve those puzzles (even some that probably weren't planned - like using the robot for teasing the guards). All commands can be given during a pause, so you don't need ninja reflexes to play. Characters have unique abilities, but others can perform most of those feats too (except Rocket's vent crawling and Robo's invisibility) by using tools, which you can buy or find on the map. Meaning, you'll play a level very differently with different crooks.
At first I was quite mad 'coz some levels couldn't be completed perfectly. Then I realized you *weren't supposed to* in the first run. You can replay them for 100%, AFTER unlocking new abilities. (Though I still managed to get all the loot during the first run in all levels but two - without being seen once.)
Challenge mode is much harder, with tougher guards and tight time limits. So re-playability is quite high.
Beside manual saves, the game has a really neat autosave feature, saving every half-a-minute or so, thus allowing you to experiment freely, not requiring a level-restart for every single mistake (like Commandos do for example).
So why just 4/5 mark? It's mostly bug-free, but there *is* one very nasty bug, which corrupts every file, saved while guards are alerted (including autosaves). So you need to save BEFORE you lure guards away (by making noise or whatever), then go without saving and making any mistakes until the alert ceases, which can be quite frustrating. If they fix this I give it 5/5.
I just wanted to say I've definitely got my $ worth, and there is much to like. It's clean and polished and escalates the game difficulty for the player very well - I didn't feel rushed or bored.
The game does seem to have a very slow memory leak - after an hour or two it will slow down... quitting and restarting the game fixes everything.
It has a great auto-save system; I do like the fact you don't lose anything you've done, even if you're caught. It moves the story line along without getting you bogged down in starting over and over.
Enjoy a slow-paced, tactical stealthy game!
