A true Masterpiece of RTS

The first commandos and his expansion were great, but is in the second episode when the game acquires a whole new dimension: Each character has his own inventory/backpack, each one could perform common actions like drive, swim or stun an enemy, so the tactics to solve the missions are multiplied by x1000. You could go stealth, or with more quick action, especially with the green beret and an MP40, or the sapper with grenades... The pretty good interiors also add lots of depth to the game. The scenarios are awesome even nowadays, with awesome level of detail in the textures, high quality enemy animations... The Colditz castle, for example, is probably one of bests maps/levels I've ever played on a videogame. Nearly all missions have big reminiscences of classic WWII films, so playing this game is like to be in a classic movie. The OST and voice acting are amazing. The bonus missions add more hours to the game trying to explore each furniture of the levels just to unlock them (10 little missions more added to the 10 big ones). The difficulty levels allow everyone to enjoy this game (even you would need your quicksave/quickload keys pretty much). A truly classic masterpiece and the best game in Commandos saga. About Commandos 3, even that is pretty similar, is a smaller, quick-combat oriented game, so isn't nicer as 2. The time limit sometimes just add not necessary pressure on the gameplay, and they reduced the number of commandos (there is no Driver, no female spy, no dog), no bonus missions... a good game, but not great as the second one.

A childhood favourite

...And it still holds up well today. Very good squad based problem solving game. There's no modern game quite like this, It resembles XCOM in some aspects but I must say I prefer this game over the modern XCOM games. Challenging and very rewarding game, make sure to save a lot and learn all the features of the game and your squad members, you'll need it :p

Make sure you know what you are in for.

This is not a review of the gameplay itself, because that is stellar, hence me not flat out giving it a 1 star review. I grew up with Commandos. I still remember the first time I played it. I never played anything like it before and it was an odd game that somehow managed to hook me with incredible freedom to complete tasks and thoughtful strategic gameplay. That being said, this is a review of a product that I paid for. It is a hassle to get running and following fixes only led to temporary solutions before I would run into trouble again. I can't reccomend them even at a very low price unless you are a superfan, meet the dated requirements or have the knowledge, skillset, want to "fix" it. For me it was not worth the headache and I am sadly moving on to playing other games.

Some of the best stealth ever

Commandos 2 is up there with the first two Thief games, most of the Hitman games and some of the Splinter Cell games in delivering the best stealth experiences. It is very much about taking your time and planning ahead, though it does definitely also deliver on short term gratification. The gameplay is addictive; it is hard to put into words how satisfying it is taking out Nazis. This game takes you to a lot of different parts of the entire planet, ones affected by World War 2, ensuring that you never tire of any one setting. The different Commandos each have skills, equipment and weapons that are unique to them, and the more you master, the greater variety is available to you. It's hard to overstate how massive an improvement this is on the already amazing original game and its expansion pack. There are several brand new features that greatly open up the game, including the inventory, the ability to actually move around inside of buildings, rather than just temporarily hiding, and the dramatic increase in how many different tools you have at your disposal. There are some parts of this where you can approach a specific situation )let's for example say that you have to get one or more Commandos from point A to point B) in a handful of distinctly different ways. You can play this many times without having to solve very many obstacles in the exact same way. I haven't played the co-op here on GOG, so I can't speak to if it runs well; but if it does I can tell you that though it definitely requires patient players it can be incredibly satisfying. Also note that for certain levels, chunks of the level won't allow use of each of the Commandos, meaning that a player may just have to sit and wait until the other player reaches the part where you get to play. I would recommend playing the levels solo first. Commandos 3 is fine; just soulless and a letdown compared to the Commandos games and expansion packs before it.
