Clive Barker's Undying

I played this in 2001 and I just finished it for a second time. This game is all about the story and that's the reason why you should play it if you've never experienced it. The mood that it sets in almost all of the varying locales is great and the backstories of each of the Covenant siblings is entertaining and remains interesting to the end. As a shooter, it's ok. Some weapons are great fun but most are lackluster. You'll find three great ones and the rest range from mediocre to terrible and you'll only use those ones when you're forced to use them. The magic spells, however, are mostly winners and I love how you get to dual-wield the weapons and magic. You'll find your favorites and stick to them. The giggling skull missiles are pure fun. The biggest problem with the game is the last stage, which is hot garbage. Just "Haste" your way through it as much as possible and get to the end.

I really wanted to love Undying but finishing it honestly became a chore. The set up is pretty interesting, mixing themes of Poe and Lovecraft with a pretty spooky Mansion setting. The gunplay starts off pretty limited but does start to open up a bit at least - using weapons and casting spells gave me BioShock vibes. However, the magic spells aren't too crazy and nothing besides the shotgun felt that great to me. The gunplay just never gelled, Patrick isn't your average mad-hopping FPS maniac and moves pretty slowly. So many flying type enemies are thrown in too, they're definitely overkill. The cool story also just goes off the rails though and hours in I didn't even know what the hell was going on anymore. The progression is also hindered by some awkward puzzle designs here and there. Undying is still worth giving a shot since it's goes for dirt cheap now, but beware it just might not be that fun as expected. 10x better than Jericho at least.

Undying is a horror shooter made by Clive Barker, a director and visual artist best known for the Hellraiser movies. In this title, you play as Patrick Galloway, a paranormal investigator coming to help Jeremiah Covenant, his friend from the war, after all his siblings died and paranormal things happen. You will fight otherworldly creatures both in and around the mansion, as well as alternate dimensions. Gameplay is similar to BioShock, you have weapons and supernatural powers, and have wheels from where you can switch them. But sadly, time doesn't slow down during the switching process so it might be a bit chaotic trying to switch during fights. The enemies are surprisingly quite varied, following the theme of the chapter of the sibling you're investigating. Boss fights are pretty cool, too. If you're a fan of horror shooters, Undying is definitely a title you shouldn't miss. I haven't delved deep into Clive Barker's creations so I probably had no idea this title existed, but now that I do, you can be sure I'll enjoy more of them.

Not a bad game really, but extremely frustrating early on. Your character is super fragile and it doesn't take anything for the enemies to squash you like a bug. Once you get the shield spell, the difficulty is night and day different, but persevering to that point is what is trying. The music score is pretty good when it's there, but more often than not you're playing in silence which isn't great either. I tried using the Undying Renewal mod, but it crashed on me fairly early in the game, so I stuck with the provided NGlide wrapper instead which was quite stable. Not a bad game really, but not exactly good either. Fairly average.

Clive Barker Undying is a masterpeice when i played it back when it came out i was blown away pretty freaky even today over 20 years later the grapgics music gameplay story the magic powers you wheeled my favorite part when you travel back to the monastery to the 13th century that music gives me gooesbumps incredible it's a shame that this game did not sale well i really like to see a sequel for this game i give it 5 stars 2001 was a great year for games.
