It's OK - just OK

I do not recall ever playing this when it was a DOS game - and I truly thought I had played just about every early FPS type game there was back then. I enjoyed playing this for the most part, it seems to be a technically well put together updated remake. But it is more of a Wolf3d maze with hidden doors and puzzles. It really throws you for a loop and kills you instantly many times, so do save the game a lot. One level actually starts with your character in boiling lava, so by the time you figure that out, you're already dead. And the puzzles are not very intuitive. I finally just gave up and uninstalled it. Maybe I did play this "back then" and just don't remember - it is very forgettable.

Broken garbage. Crashes at launch.

Just to get it out of the way, Chasm The Rift is a very competent FPS from the golden era with some exclusive features for the time such as enemy disfigurement and interlude mission briefings. Think of a lower budget, slavic version of Quake. Playable on dosbox for a vanilla experience but with poor performance, this is where the remaster was supposed to come in offering hardware acceleration, high resolution scaling and some other modern improvements. Unfortunately the game simply refuses to load on certain systems automatically crashing despite exeeding all system requirements. What's worse is that the sneg devs have stated on the steam forums that they were aware of the problem and were going to fix it... IN 2022... It's now going on 3 years and the problem as of this review is still not resolved. I have contacted sneg support and received no reply for over a month. I have contacted gog support and received no reply for 2 weeks. Both companies have stolen my money for a broken game and don't give a damn. The gog refund policy is a scam and so are the lying incompetent developers at sneg.

Good Shooter

As a big DOOM fan, I find Chasm: The Rift challenging. The game has a good arsenal and decent voice acting, but the locations can be confusing. It's a cool game and quite interesting.

Too Flawed to be a Classic

I want to preface by saying I am purely criticizing the game itself and not the remaster. The remaster's quality is quite good and I have no complaints with it. Sadly the game itself is really lacking and was a big let down for me. It's clearly heavily inspired by Doom but didn't take a lot of the most important lessons away from that game. Notably this game has a very awkward combat loop with enemies that are real damage sponges and weapons with very slow fire rates. Similar to Doom, damage received from enemies is semi-random, but so is damage the player does leading to inconsistent encounters that frustrate in many cases. It's not assisted by the fact that most enemies are hiding around corners or ready to spawn in front of your face to get cheap kills constantly. This combined with how many weapons are projectile based and get caught on the terrible map geometry leads to an incredibly frustrating experience. The best gun in the game is the starting shotgun purely because it is hitscan and deals full damage at any range as long as one pellet connects. The devs clearly understood this because they try to starve the player of shotgun ammo in all but the early levels of any given episode. Maps are a chokefest and you'll die constantly to getting caught in hallways or trapped in rooms with one way entrances all done in service to pad out a very short game. For $20 this is a lot to ask for such a polarizing experience that rarely brought me any joy to play. To its credit, Chasm has a dismemberment system which was very ahead of its time and is still fun. It would be much better if it were more consistently easy to dismember specific limbs to give the player an edge in combat, but it's fun regardless. TLDR; bad chokey maps, spongey enemies, lame weapons, middling experience. Only for the hardcore retro FPS enthusiast.
