Solid Western Game

I really enjoyed Call of Juarez: Gunslinger (CoJ:G). The gameplay is solid, the graphics and sound work well, there is a well-narrated story line, and the controls and UI work fine (I played with an XBox controller). The protagonist, Silas Greaves, is likable, and the voice acting is well done. There are enough weapons to add variety to the gameplay as you hunt down some of the Wild West's most notorious outlaws. There are several quick-button events, but no big deal. The only issues that I had with the game are all minor. The quick-draw mini-game was hard to figure out, even when I won. These draws should have been high points of the game. Also, some of the skills that you could acquire were rather useless, though there were a good number of choices overall. But these are again minor gripes. Red Dead Redemption is still the gold standard for western-themed games. However CoJ:G is a great addition to the genre.

Simply amazing!

Not one of the best shooters, or westerns, but one of the best games i've ever played. It was beautiful, entertaining and funny, i love linear games and this one was a 10/10 for me. Btw i got it for less than 3 euros so it was a steal.

Great action packed FPS

As incredible as it might sound up today there are only a handful of western FPS games and even less good ones. I can only think of Outlaws and Call of Juarez trilogy and that is it. So any new western fps will be close to the top but Gunslinger is a really good game on its own. It is basically a simulator of a badass gunslinger. If you ever longed to shoot bad guys in wild west with a colt, a rifle and a shotgun then this is your dream come true. It is needed to mention that it is a very lineral game with elements of on-rail shooters especially compared to COJ 1 and 2. Sometimes you get some free choice how to attack but mostly it is just a corridor like game. There is even a story which is quite funny and badass but it is also completely redundant. It is not a story driven adventure like its two predecessors. You will likely forget the entire storyline in a week. So in the end it is mainly focused on action and the action is amazing.

A product of its time

To be clear, I'm writing this from a perspective of someone who's more used to old-timey FPS games of the 90s and early 2000s which generally didn't hold your hand. Picked up CoJ: Gunslinger on sale because it looked neat and came away pleasantly surprised, but couldn't fail to notice the hall marks of an 2010-era FPS: - Very linear levels with little to no player freedom, walking from set piece to set piece. - One-way drops leading into obvious combat arenas with enemies surrounding you from all sites. - Sudden and frankly disjointed QTEs that tend to also disable your movement keys. - Game slowing down your character (no more sprinting) or even time to make sure you hear that piece of dialogue. - An abundance of dialogue in general you can't hear or follow over the gunfire. - Frankly pointless skill progression system. So not exactly what I was looking for. Regardless, I did enjoy my time with this game and it managed to absorb me into the story courtesy of superb voice acting, well-crafted cut scenes and the overall ambience. Essentially boils down to an old cowboy sharing his life stories while getting drunk with strangers, so everything tends to be ridiculously over-the-top spaghetti western style nonsense. Who cares about historical accuracy? I love it! There's also an underlying dark theme to it as Silas is a broken old man with a troubled past and many regrets. A relic of the past without a purpose in life. The last two missions kinda ruined the experience, however. Movement and gunplay were also excellent. Silas controls like a human being rather than a featherweight super soldier. All guns felt great to use with some believable weight to them, but I certainly did miss clouds of black powder smoke! Silas' "Concentration" superpower worked well enough for me. I also enjoyed the instant action arcade mode, which uses slightly modified levels from the campaign but with way more enemies. I did not like any of the duels, though. Recommended.

An awesome FPS

Somehow this reminded me of "No one lives forever", but western style and more "hack and slash". I got hooked immediately and finished the game within a week. The RPG style really does it all. You don't really want to quit until you've reached the next level and you really make an effort finding all the secrets because of the XP bonus. Very beautiful atmosphere and graphics which I think was a bit ahead of its time. Voice acting is totally superb compared with it's predecessors. Sound effects of the gun shots are much more joyful as well. I totally love how they tell a story while playing and then "...but that was not how it actually was" and then they reverse the game back to the beginning again with another plot. This is totally ingenious. Love this game! 10/10
