Going into this not knowing anything is probably the best, though I might've chosen to play it another time if I had known that the deceptively pretty graphics can lead to a very sad and sometimes quite dark story.
Now, I also somehow managed to miss the strong recommendation for a controller - which I'm glad I did, since I don't own one and it is still well playable with a keyboard. The puzzles, albeit simple, are tied well within the story, and since they're intuitive the progress is quite smooth (which in my opinion not many puzzle/story games achieve).
The gibberish that the characters occasionally speak was a bit jarring to me, but I sort of understand the decision to forgo actual language, and convey information via other means.
so where to start...
the game sucks, to many games already exist with the gibberish VO work this take in gaming has been done to death and is not endearing in the least. i do not know about others but there does not seem to be any point to having sound in the game at all at this point...
not to mention things like being able to understand the plot/story if there was one...
the only thing we know for certain is the boys mother died, their father is sick and they have to go on a 'quest' to find medicine sort of, oh and everyone is either indifferent or actively preventing the boys from getting anything...
the game mechanics are well, wonky, at the best of times and frustratingly insane at others, also the interaction buttons and keyboard/mouse setup SUCKS!!
if you have a controller you might be able to play the game and possibly enjoy, if you do not have a controller prepare for a massive slog of frustration with the controls.
the sounds, the music is crap plain and simple...
the background sound and 'VO' work will blast your head off because at default it is at 100% and if you have a headset/headphones on it feels like your head is being caved in from the blast of noise...
the graphics are ok, massively fuzzy and get worse when the 'camera' gets stuck and you are in close up on one or both of the boys, you cannot see a damn thing beside nasty blur... thanks to this being a port with very little focus given to how graphics would look when on a monitor instead of a tv screen.
if you decide to change the keybindings with keyboard/mouse setup, expect those bindings to be completely backwords to what they are supposed to do...
almost making it impossible to play the game at all...
never ever pay full price for this game/port, you will regret it...
even when it is on sale do not pay more than 2-3 dollars at the most, if you want to find out for yourself if you like the game or not (frankly i still suggest trying before you buy), these are my experiences and opions.
While the story tries to be moving (and I think kids may like it), the gameplay doesn't even try to be entertaining, but it can be enjoyable from time to time. The game is great in co-op, so why not play it with your kid?
And I don't expect it to be replaced anytime soon.
This game made me feel emotions no other game had before, and if you can find a few hours (maybe 4) to play it in one session, then you should, it's worth it.
Can be played with a keyboard, but having a controler will be much better.
A great little game with a very engaging story, original gameplay and a unique way of controlling the main protagonists, the two brothers. I played this on my Nvidia SHIELD TV using the SHIELD controller and it played great. The controls are intuitive and feel really responsive. I have read that the game can also be played with mouse and keyboard but a controller is really recommended if you want the best experience.
I was surprised at how engaging the story was without any sort of real dialogue or narrative. The journey is quite emotional and the music and especially the sound design add a lot to the overall atmosphere of the game. Though it's only 3 hours long, the length of the game feels about right.
It's also a very nice looking game with beautiful rendered backgrounds and fluid animations. The locations you visit are very diverse and the game never feels dull or repetitive because of this. All in all this is a game that everyone should give a try. It's a great testament of what a small group of talented designers can do. Be sure to pick it up, it's well worth it.
