Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain

i was surprised to see this classic come to GOG with no fanfare! and more surprised still to realize my wired DS4 (no software installed, just wired via usb to charge) worked perfectly with it - it seems they set it up to work right away! must buy if you're into the classics, and check out the other games! blood omen 2's sort of a mixed bag imho but defiance is an incredible game and the soul reaver games are classics in their own right

As always on GOG, I advise people to be highly suspicious of 5 star, nostalgia-addled reviews, and I think the original Blood Omen is a good example of it. I'm happy to say that from a technical standpoint I've had no difficulties - My Xbox controller worked right off the bat, and I never had any crashes, slow downs or otherwise. Some of the magic items seemed to have no effect, but whether it's GOG's version or the game itself I cannot tell. The game itself is, unsurprisingly, rather dated in some aspects, most notably resource management (There were long stretches without any ability to heal, while at other times I was showered by consumables that that I promptly ran out of after a boss fight), the control scheme (It does illustrate how much we've come in terms of gamepad conventions), a lack of subtitles or the oft-infuriating difficulty spikes (Being stun locked, poisoned or those fucking ranged wizard enemies). Blood Omen is reminiscent of a darker Legend of Zelda with unlockable abilities that allow you to get to previously unreachable locations and a decent array of gear suited for different situation. The world sets itself apart from your typical fantasy affair with some fairly unique enemy designs (Both bosses and The cherry on top, and what ultimately made me stick with the game through the end, is Kain himself. He's such a pleasant little ray of sunshine and a delightf to listen to. is carried by the protagonist who is such a delightful ray of sunshine and a pleasure to listen to. TL;DR - If you can get past the jank and some frustrating encounters, it's great fun.

Legacy of Kain Blood Omen has been legally tied for so long, that I almost (almost...) lost hope it will ever find it's way to GOG – where it clearly belongs! This is as old and as good as it gets. I remember checking GOG regularly for any updates on this, since trying to get back to this true gem of a game without modern support was difficult at best and impossible at worst. The game for all intents and purposes is similar to Diablo, but released a little earlier. It has great graphics for its time, an engaging story and interesting characters. Although there are similarities, Blood Omen does its own thing confidently. Most importantly however it is the first game released in the fenomenal Legacy of Kain series, which is by many gamers and critics alike (yours truly included) considered one of the best plots in all of gaming history. The events in this game are also probably the most crucial for the whole Legacy of Kain story. Many things that happen here (and are only rarely mentioned later) send out ripples for the whole land of Nosgoth and especially its two paragons - Kain and Raziel. So finally Blood Omen has found its rightful home on GOG! And it completes the Legacy of Kain library. Also for its fame, goodines and almost abandonware status, at this price it should be an obligatory, no-brainer buy for any fan of old-school gaming or great video game plots!

This game is a brilliant take on an adult "Zelda-like". It's definitely aged by modern standards graphically speaking, but it has some of the most brilliant writing and voicework to ever grace PCs. If you are interested at all in classic PC gaming, this is a MUST HAVE. It's up there with the greats in my opinion.
