More than half the time you save the game it will crash. Not only will it crash... it deletes ALL your save files within the save folder. So, the next time you start the game you will not see any of your save files.
I looked online for solutions but they don't work, seems like it happens on Steam as well and the solutions are meant for that platform.
I really tried to enjoy the game but this bug prevents you from progressing and enjoying it.
Get the original (non-remastered). It crashes less, and your save files won't be deleted randomly. Though I should mention that changing the resolution and trying to use a controller will bug out sometimes and it takes a lot of patience and configuration to get those working.
To keep it simple: The game is as beautiful if not prettier than the original. However, it is filled with bugs and errors that are never going to be fixed anymore. I personally wanted to replay the whole series and thought doing so with the remastered version would be a great idea: it offers increased FOV, crisper and cleaner textures and doesn't struggle with animations not tied to fps etc.
But then, there were the bugs, especially the one that made me stop playing and uninstalling the remaster. There is a chance that the game might crash the moment you save your game. I read online that people therefor recommend using at least 2 different save files, meaning you should always save twice. Why is that important? Because if the game crashes while saving, your file is corrupted and won't show up the next time you re-launch the main menu.
Even using 2 save files might not do it for you, depending on how often that bug occurs. I personally don't want to think about my safe files possibly corrupted all the time. The only saving grace and the reason I leave it at 2 stars is that you're getting classic Bioshock as well with this one. If it is on sale, buy the remaster and play the original. I did and it still runs great, for me personally on Linux and Proton GE 9-4. Textures are less polished but still look great imo and the smaller FOV actually increases the immersion and makes the gameplay more intimate.
Still, if you're planning to get it for the remaster, especially on full price: don't.
Unlike the syncophantic fanboy alleluias found most everywhere, my impressions upon returning to play through this game 10 years later tells me something entirely different. I've played a lot more games, old and new, since I first played this in 2007, and Bioshock simply doesn't hold up to the standards of both its past *and* its future.
The controls and mechanics still feel overly floaty and slightly disconnected from my input, which does little to engage me in the action. The AI does what it's been scripted to do: act loud and dumb to make it ridiculously easy for the player, even on Hard with Vita-chambers disabled. The story is stereotypical to a fault-- underwater Randian dystopia for teens--and the voice acting hams up what would have been otherwise half-decent dialogue. (Fontaine's voice acting is particularly egregious.)
Now, I didn't think it was all bad--the Steinman's Office level is still as unforgettable a slice of grisly horror as the day I played it, Andrew Ryan's character has this intriguing bittersweet tragedy about it a-la Charles Foster Kane, the fights against the big daddies still excite, and there's this undeniable mood about Rapture that invites revisits. But on the whole, it all feels so juvenile to me now, especially in the light of having played more mature shooters like S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and the original System Shock.
It's not easy to admit, but some nostalgia really *is* rose-tinted!
BioShock 1 is a game that transcends the boundaries of the first-person shooter genre and delivers a rich, immersive, and unforgettable experience. Set in the underwater city of Rapture, a utopian vision gone horribly wrong, the game invites you to explore a mysterious and dangerous world, where you will encounter twisted enemies, powerful weapons, and mind-bending abilities.
The game's story is one of its strongest aspects, as it unfolds through audio logs, radio transmissions, and environmental clues, creating a sense of mystery and intrigue that keeps you hooked until the end. The game also features a memorable cast of characters, each with their own motivations and agendas, and some of the most memorable villains in gaming history, such as the megalomaniacal Andrew Ryan and the terrifying Big Daddies.
The game's gameplay is equally impressive, as it offers a variety of options and strategies for combat and exploration. You can use conventional weapons, such as pistols, shotguns, and machine guns, or you can use plasmids, genetic enhancements that grant you supernatural powers, such as shooting lightning, fire, or bees from your hands. You can also hack security devices, such as cameras, turrets, and robots, to turn them against your enemies, or use environmental objects, such as water, oil, and gas, to create traps and diversions.
The game's graphics and sound are also outstanding, as they create a stunning and immersive atmosphere that draws you into the game's world. The game's art direction is superb, as it captures the retro-futuristic aesthetic of the 1960s, with a mix of art deco, steampunk, and horror elements. The game's sound design is also excellent, the soundtrack is beautiful!
BioShock 1 is a game that deserves all the praise and acclaim it has received, as it is a masterpiece of storytelling, gameplay, and art design. It is a game that will challenge you, surprise you, and move you, and a game that you will never forget.
Final Rating: 10/10
I started the game - it had some enjoyable parts as well as some annoying ones... but at the end none of that mattered. The games crashes on loading saved games. I looked for some community solutions online - none of them worked. I uninstalled the game 2 days after purchase.
