As soon as the game starts you are thrust into a story and it does not let you leave. Playing this game is like playing a movie. The game is a seamless blend of brief, impressively polished cutscenes that flow with the gameplay and drive the storytelling along, so that you are always immersed in the story. Of course, the gameplay itself is fun and the controls are very intuitive for a third person action game, which makes for a grinningly good experience as your magic stick thing whizzes around, satisfyingly thwacking into enemies. If you like a well made game and especially if you can appreciate good storytelling, Beyond Good and Evil should not be missed.
This is the biggest problem of gaming - people are usually interested in buying a game they already know (with the same gameplay mechanics, with similar graphics, with cliche characters, with crappy storyline, similar to everything they've seen). Thus real gems, shining with originality, beauty and taste, are most of the time overlooked under the piles of crap - and don't become smashing hits.
Beyond Good & Evil is one of such games - overlooked, underappreciated, known and loved by few.
So if you're looking for something different, original, beautiful - get your ass and buy it. It's a deal you'll never, ever, regret.
I actually bought this game for the PS2 years back and I still have it, but I wanted to say this was an excellent game! Great story, wonderful characters... I though it was a great buy at only $20, now you can get it here for only $10... DO IT!
I used to have this game for GameCube. It is one of my all time favorite games. I plan to download it so I can experience again on my laptop.
The production value and presentation are excellent. The art direction is excellent. The game has several different play styles as you progress through different sections - fighting, sneaking, platforming, racing, and even a few puzzles. It's all woven together into a seamless whole, with a compelling story and characters that grow on you.
If you haven't played this one, I can't recommend it enough. A true classic.
Beyond Good And Evil, while not actually linked to the philosophical opus of the same name, has several things in common with it:
1) Both are uniquely sculpted, breathtaking masterpieces. Even if the content isn't to your liking, both are worth buying simply for the graphics. Beyond Good and Evil is widely recognised as an under-appreciated classic, if not for its argumentation then certainly for its design and innovation.
2) The content is great anyway. Nietzsche is at the peak of his rhetorical ability, and the story is surprisingly gripping considering the cast of characters is largely composed of anthropomorphic cartoon animals. While the logic behind its radical anti-theism is sometimes questionable, you should make no mistake : this isn't just some kids' game.
3) It should be noted, however, that the games combat interface can be a little irritating or repetetive at times, particularly when faced with wave after wave of obscure aphorisms. However, this negative stands in high contrast to the game's other central focus, which is photography - the gorgeous visuals make this very enjoyable, and the side-quest to photograph every species in the game adds replay value.
4) While Christian thought is accused of being 'life-denying' for maintaining a perspective which places the afterlife in the foreground, the game fails to justify the conclusion that this is in some way unacceptable. For if your hideous half-pig uncle Pej wishes to assert that truth should not be trusted over falsehood for lack of justification to this effect, then he must surely admit that even if God is dead, we should be nevertheless permitted to believe in Him.
