Beyond: Good and Evil - игра золотой эпохи Ubisoft, чистое доказательство того, как детская и незамудрённая на вид игра может обладать таким глубоким сюжетом и затрагивать серьёзные темы, над которыми задумываешься немедля.
Just played the game for the first time, on the PC. I greatly enjoyed the story, the characters and soundtrack, the sneaking around, and taking photographs as a means of earning money and also as vital part of the story progression. I found the gameplay well balanced between stealth, boss fights, racing, puzzles and mini-games.
What I did not enjoy so much were the directional controls and camera. The controls appeared to be bound not to the relative direction of the player character (e.g. forward, backward, left, right) but rather to the edges of the screen (up, down, left, right) as if it was a 2D side-scrolling game. This wasn't noticeable if you were in a 1st person or 3rd person over-the-shoulder view, but it would throw you off completely when the camera suddenly changed to a side view (which it did frequently and unpredictably).
Some boss fights proved rather annoying as well (I never felt fully in control during fighting sequences), but fortunately the game is designed to reload at the start of the current fight if you die, regardless of the last save point, making it a great deal less frustrating than it would otherwise be. You can die many times until you get through a seemingly 'impossible' fight--usually you have to figure out the correct attack pattern, so each boss fight is more like solving a puzzle than hitting until you deplete their HP (in fact, enemies don't have a health bar at all).
Last but not least, the vehicular action, since you spend a good part of the game riding a hovercraft: Vehicle controls felt even more awkward than the fighting controls, to the point I eventually gave up on completing a number of side quests entirely (particularly the 4 race tracks and 4 looter caverns); luckily they were more like mini-games and not necessary to advance the story, so unless you are an obsessive completionist you can skip them and enjoy the rest of the game, which is what I did.
Works flawlessly on Linux via lutris-7.2-2-x86_64 runner.
Really needs the widescreen fix found here:

Serious negative though in that you can not invert Y access on the mouse. It is backwards.
Controllers don't seem to work with it either.
Minus a couple stars for both issues.
It has the POTENTIAL to be a very good game. However, it just isn't. I'm guessing all the 5* reviews on here have to be from people who reviewed it after only the first level, when there's a lot of exploration and not a lot of combat. At that point, the game's shortcomings don't become apparent.
On the plus side, the general concept, story, character design, graphics are all there. It has the feel of a good console adventure game, with jRPG type characters.
On negative? The game doesn't handle the camera positioning and control orientation very well, especially in tight spaces. Later in the game, you'll be crawling through factories and doing a lot of combat against tougher foes. Some that won't take any damage unless taken by surprise. The problem is that the game has a nasty habit of rearranging the camera orientation multiple times or totally spazzing out in tight quarters. This is a pain because you'd be running away or carefully maneuvering a minefield one minute and suddenly find the camera angle and your travel direction reversed -- right back at the invulnerable enemies or into a bunch of mines or a laser field. At other times, when there's a wall anywhere near your character, the camera appears to reposition itself inside the wall and get stuck there -- granting you a view of grey or tan nothing and jumbled polygons and no way to see what's going on. Sometimes this corrects itself, or you can use the "compass" or "camera" view to compensate. Often, the only way is to restart from the last save and hope it goes better the next time.
None of this is an issue in the early levels because it's all exploration and relatively open spaces, with no sneaking, traps or invulnerable enemies. Later in the game, however, this is a serious bug. It's a good game, right up until you get half way, then it's all frustration.
This was a hit and miss game for me. The meat of the story was well told, if a little cliche. Also, the wit that the developers threw in was very well done (I loved the species names for the humanoids!) - always a big plus!
(HERE'S THE SPOILER!)
The ending, however, was just wacky. You can get it to make sense in your mind, but compared to the rest of the trip, it was C grade. I hate to include stuff like this in a review, but it REALLY dragged me down. I mean to the point where I told my wife "That really changed my mind; the story was okay before, but now...."
The gameplay was simple at best. The only thing I flat out enjoyed was taking pictures of different creatures. Loved it in Bioshock, too. It's too bad combat couldn't compete. Other reviews have said it before, so this shouldn't be a big surprise. Combat gameplay is just a massive clickfest. You can try and ingest some strategy into it, but you'll die more. It's not very interesting and could be removed from the game without taking away anything. The stealth sections are much better. Still, they boil down to extremely simple timing games and very obvious puzzle sections. I understandthat it's been a while since this came out, but it still seems like this was designed for a younger audience. To sum up my opinions on the game, I wouldn't recommend BGE, but I wouldn't shoot you down either.
Okay, that was the review of the game. Now, for the technical side. This is a port. I get it. But come on! This thing was buggy as heck! The controls are weird, the camera is flat out attrocious, the graphics would come in and out on me, I gave up on it for a while because it kept crashing... I won't dock a game for its glitches, but be warned: your patience might be tested.
