One of the best turn based games.

I play a lot of turn based games, i started young with games like, fft, front mission and fire emblem. And this game is an addition to my list of absolute favorites. After several hundred hour i seem to have more fun every time i come back to it. This game is a solid foundation with a very rewarding core game loop. It is almost an auto buy for any battletech fans. It does not follow the rule set for the board game to the letter, but i suspect it might be better off that way, and im not sure hbs even has the licensing to do that. Almost anything you want seems to exist as a mod for this game so its hard to grade the ammount of content. But i feel like the art and cinimatic style of this game have really ben a solid step forward for the setting and themes in the battletech ip. That is high praise for a videogame connected to so much lore. Turn based games suffer from longer playtime due to their nature. This game is not immune to that issue but has configurable options to speed up the game. I would guess that most players who take the time to go and set the game to faster and skip any cinimatic camera they dont really want (melee, shooting, jumping, there are tons) will end up with a pretty decent paced game. The dlc are worth picking up for any career playthrough (an additional non main story merc mode). But not required for a solid first play.

quite disappointing

So, Battletech... I love the lore and settings, so when a friend recommended me this game I thought I would try it The good things I have to say about it : Nothing to say about the graphics, as they're pretty decent and the mechs look amazing. The story of the campaign is also pretty nice, and wonderfully embraces how morally grey the universe can be. Now what do I have to reproach the game ? Game design, pretty much everything about it. First thing, combat is RNG-based... EVERYTHING in said combat is RNG-based You don't win because you're good at the game, but because you're LUCKY, that alone would be enough of a red-flag for me, but that's just the first issue. In this game, you can only deploy 4 mechs per mission, no matter if you just start the campaign or if you're very late-game you can only bring 4 mechs The AI doesn't have this limit Just in rank 2 missions, you're fighting 2v1 (at best), and it only gets worse as you progress. On top of that, the AI cheats and hard. Accuracy is basically a non-factor for it, you have no way of avoid damage while YOU have to find ways to bypass the AI's evasion stats Combine the two, and basically 1/3 of the game's mechs (the light ones) are basically useless, as they just get killed instantly. No team composition, no team synergy, you just put the heaviest guys you have and pray RNG doesn't hate you too much And it gets worse : all the main missions in the campaign are very poorly designed. Between escort missions, getting spawn-camped by 8 turrets right at the start of the mission or simply fighting 3 times your mech's numbers (and usually better mechs than yours as well), every main mission felt like a chore Once the power-fantasy of big giant mechs fades away, all that's left is a grindy, very unfair game with horrible RNG If you're a huge fan of the licence, you may find ways to appreciate this game, but if you're not I cannot recommend you try it. It's not good for your blood pressure

Disappointing

I was a Kickstarter backer and so looking forward to this game. At first it was a lot of fun, well balanced challenges and tactics that you could use to have some success, but at some point the difficulty ramps up well out of proportion to the capability of your unit. Even missions rated at the lowest difficulty result in a two to one advantage in favour of the enemy as a minimum. That would be manageable if you could fight them in waves or clusters, but enemy reinforcements appear immediately after contact with then main force resulting in your lance being overwhelmed. At this stage I had only seen heavy mechs in the hands of the enemy and had no opportunity to increase my own fire power to balance the enemy forces. On top of that the game is unstable even to the point of having to shut my PC down in order to get out of the game. Great concept and I love the presentation. I love being able to customise mechs, swapping weapon combinations, but the staging of the challenges is appalling.

Great game,must have turn-based strategy

This is a great turn-based strategy game, which is a lot of fun even for people (like me) who are not familiar with the Battletech tabletop game. It's like XCOM Lite with Mechs instead of soldiers. The main campaign has a nice enough story, interesting characters, and decent writing. The game-play is smooth and I haven't encountered any bugs (these were already cleaned out I suppose). There is a very large variety of mechs to play with -- it is true that you won't have a use for lighter, and later, medium mechs as you advance in the game, but this never bothered me and instead felt like natural progression. The battles/missions work technically flawless and I found them to have enough variety: different types of climate/environment, different mission objectives, different types of enemies etc. It could have used a better tutorial though. In the beginning I was overwhelmed with the (partially unexplained) bits of information on the battle screen. Did some reading online and I was fine... I would strongly recommend this game, even if you are not really into giant fighting robots.

Extreme difficulty spike. yikes!

30 hours int the game & had great time until the difficulty skull suddenly meant nothing. I was having fun with doable moderate difficulty with 3 skulls then it turned almost impossible with 1 1/2. All of a sudden it;s a 8 on 4. The enemy will sensor lock & fire missiles at you when not even in range & the their armor is increased to point where enemy light lances have armor equal to a medium or light heavy. The enemy will get multiple turns, sometime the whole enemy team will have consecutive attacks where you might get 2 team members to have consecutive to attacks. Gonna go back & grind 1 skull until i have enough money & tech before progressing with the story. hope that helps. If that doesn't I'm gonna ask for a refund.
