Battle Brothers is a turn based tactical RPG which has you leading a mercenary company in a gritty, low-power, medieval fantasy world. You decide where to go, whom to hire or to fight, what contracts to take and how to train and equip your men in a procedurally generated open world campaign. Do you have what it takes to lead them through bloody battles and to victory?
The game consists of a strategic worldmap and a tactical combat layer. On the worldmap you can freely travel in order to take contracts that earn you good coin, find places worth looting, enemies worth pursuing or towns to resupply and hire men at. This is also where you manage, level up and equip your Battle Brothers. Once you engage a hostile party the game will switch to a tactical map where the actual fighting takes place as detailed turn based combat.
Manage a medieval mercenary company in a procedurally generated open world.
Fight complex turn-based tactical battles with historical equipment and brutal injuries.
Permadeath. All characters that die in combat will stay dead – unless they return as the undead.
All characters come with their own background stories and traits. Want a stuttering ratcatcher, a greedy witch hunter or a drunkard disowned noble?
Character development without a restrictive class-system. Each character gains experience through combat, can level up and acquire powerful perks.
Equipment that matters. Different weapons grant unique skills – split shields with axes, stun enemies with maces, form a spearwall with spears or crush armor with a warhammer.
Diverse enemy roster. All enemies have unique equipment, skills and AI behavior.
A dynamic event system with atmospheric encounters and tough decisions outside of combat.
Three late game crises – a war between noble houses, a greenskin invasion and an undead scourge – add a looming threat.
Two full hours of orchestral soundtrack.

Let me start with the positives (which are basically everything). The game is beautiful, the art style is great, the sound effects and music are a real treat to listen and watch. The game is basically a mix between X-com and Mount and Blade. you travel around the world managing your company of mercenaries, doing missions, exploring and doing your best to not die or go broke (whichever happens first)
The game is immersive and very addicting. the may problem of the game comes during combat. here you go into a tactical view and you move your troops in turns like the original xcom. each unit has a limited amount of points to spend per turn and you decide what to do when and where.
The issue arrive whenever you wanna hit or avoid getting by something. here the RNG system, which everywhere you look you'll find defined as "true RNG so stop complaining". What this means is that the system is neutral to both parties, you and the enemy. so for example... you may find yourself missing tens of 60 to 70 percent attacks while your enemy can hit you like a champion of the sword. its a pain and its as frustrating as you can imagine. But the thing is... like I said earlier, the system is neutral, which means that for every time this happens to you, it'll also happen to the enemy, and those moments are great.
The game is great and if you enjoy xcom type games with hit chances and so on, you'll probably enjoy this game a lot. just be aware that the odds are never on your favour, nor do they are on the enemy's side.
If anything, despite how frustrating it can be, the devs managed to create a world that feels as dangerous to you as it is for your enemies.
If I had to criticize this game for one thing, it would be the starting difficulty. In every campaign regardless of difficulty setting the first few battles are the hardest. Some brothers will die if you get unlucky. Until you get some levels, more people in your roster and better equipment on your team, even the easiest fights in the game can screw you over. But a bit later in the campaign (around day 30 in-game time) you have more options and can choose your own difficulty: You choose what contracts to take and what fights to fight. And if you underestimate your enemy, you can loose. And that’s great. I disagree with the “losing is fun” mentality; but winning is immensely more satisfying as long as there is a possibility of losing.
So why exactly offers this game great value for the money you pay?
Variety and replayability (even more so with the DLC, but they are NOT required to enjoy the game).
The worldmap is different every time you play.
The stats on your recruits are randomized depending on background.
The perk system is very open; there are no predefined classes. Every time you level up (until a soft level-cap) you get a perk and some stats. You then can choose perks that fit the stats of the character or try to fit the stats to the perks you want to give to the character. Be creative.
The artstile is gorgeous and timeless. It reminds me of playing a board game. This means this game will look just as great in ten years as it does now.
The soundtrack is amazing and the sound design lets you get immersed in the world.
The writing (for events, backgrounds, etc.) is solid; sometimes funny, sometimes dark.
The turn based combat could be described as a masterpiece. It has almost endless possibilities and brings the whole game together.
I can without a doubt recommend this game to anyone who likes a medieval, low-fantasy setting or turn based tactics games in general. This is one of the best.
This game is a lot of fun, but it does get repetitive. You slowly develop a soldier (brother) only to get him killed or even maimed. I had an archer from the beginning and he lost an eye and couldn't hit anything after that.
There is a bit of a learning curve. Developing your brothers according to their strengths makes all of the difference. Visiting bars is important because you have to keep them happy. Armor upgrades are worth the money!
My only complaint is that there isn't really any kind of story to it. It is just about building your company larger and more powerful. There is a storyline that happens in the overall world and you can get involved in that a bit.
Oh, and the random maps are simply amazing and gorgeous! It feels like a real world!
The best way I can describe this game is that it's a mixture of Mount & Blade: Warband with Darkest Dungeon.
Extremely brutal & addictive. I have died so many times but I really enjoy coming back and trying again. A great game if you're looking for one to sink a lot of hours into building up your mercenary company and also a great game if you're just looking for a game to play for an hour or two here and there.
Some hilarious writing, great art and fantastic music accompanied by some fun and simple turn based combat.
a) the graphics are cleverly picturesque and delliver the medieval fieling quite well. injuries, armors etc. being drawn graphics fell into the artistic section so to like them or not is adjective.
b) the battle mechanics are among the best i have ever met on a game. the battles feeling realistic and let you try different strategies in a logical way. the ground, armor, training, enemies everything plays its part. you think something of a logical solution to a situation, you try it and you have many possibilities to succed.
c) the game is difficult but no in the darkest dungeon punishing way. dont play on veteran because "you are a turned based die hard", play in easiest is not shame and will let you judge the game for what it is.
d) the music and especially the sounds are super immersive. the classes sound impactfull, the screamings, roarings, high quality work.
e) the RNG thing is just RNG thing. it is good that is there. it is not a chess match perce, on a battle many things can go wrong, the wind, a misstep, luck. it is not unfair its just that.
f) the base game is ok, once you get the DLCs the next step should be to try the Legend mod.
and for conclusion. I personally love the open world and open ending games. I understand that the campaign for some people seems without purpose and after a ( long ) time you are out of clear goals. ( reminded me of the total war campaigns, when you are overly powerfull and loose interest ) But in battle brothers if you continue you will most likely die, and i think that the games story is just that usually a sellswords life is eventually destined to end in death and bitter.
