Baldur’s Gate: Siege of Dragonspear adds a new chapter to the Bhaalspawn saga. The events occurring between Baldur’s Gate and Baldur’s Gate II are at last revealed in this 25-hour expansion for Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition.
Expand Your Story: Explore new areas, fight new monsters, and win new rewards in the Siege of Dragonspear expansion to Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition. Continue the adventure by exporting your game to Baldur’s Gate II: Enhanced Edition
Explore the Sword Coast: Venture through vibrant new hand-painted areas in the classic style of the original Baldur’s Gate
Gather Your Party: The original cast returns to kick butt for goodness - along with Neera, Rasaad, Dorn, and four new additions!
Extra Class: New items, quests, and a new class: the spirit-calling shaman!
Story Mode: A difficulty setting to allow players to experience all of the story with none of the Game Over screens
Legacy of Bhaal: A new extra-hard difficulty setting for experienced players.
Constant crashing and terrible writing make this a slog to play through. I don't care about writers putting their own political views into their writing, but when you choose to do so at the cost of any sort of nuance or by rewriting a previously established character (looking at you, Viconia) then you've lost me.
Even if I were to ignore the writing in this game, I can't ignore the technical and gameplay flow issues. Constant crashing, linear game design and areas that are essentially combat gauntlets with no way to resurrect characters make this a chore to get through.
AVOID.
The game isn't great, but it's not as bad as the top negative reviews would lead you to believe. I only rate it a 5 to balance out the 1s, neither of which it deserves.
I bought the game in spite of all the negative reviews, because I was more curious to see how out of proportion people were blowing these issues more than I was curious about seeing another Baldur's Gate installment.
For the most part regarding the people losing their minds over political issues, social justice and the trans character, I was right. Way blown out of proportion, mind bogglingly so. The trans character for example, is literally a side npc who brings this aspect of themselves up over the course of 3-4 dialogue boxes, one time.
The main problem with the game is that it bears the Baldur's Gate name. It would've been at least a solid 3.5/5 little infinity engine Icewind Dale-style game if it was its own story with its own characters.
The pacing and scale of the quest is just so out of place when you consider its place in the saga. You are fighting liches and dragons and devils and are literally drowning in unique magical loot. Everyone you do a little favour for rewards you with some sort of magic item, and every other rock you flip over has a magical artifact under it, it seemed. Felt like the "Why can't I hold all these limes" guy, but with magic items. Maybe some people enjoy this, but to me it felt like something that should be happening on the tail end of Throne of Bhaal.
The only other thing that annoyed me was inconsistent voice acting/recording quality. Some of it top tier, some of it guy in a basement with a WalMart mic tier.
Other than that, the environments and art in general were really nice, especially indoor areas. The music was great, especially the main theme. Great to hear the old voice actors. The linearity was actually welcome as a change of pace, and fits well between the super free roaming bg1 and 2.
The game is worth at least one playthrough for a bg fan.
Can you play Dragon Age?
One look at top reviews, 'overall rating', and 'verified owners rating' tells you immediately this game stirred a controversy and was review bombed. Keeping to the game only, here's a recap; judge yourself:
- A companion had a quip 'It's all about ethics in heroic adventuring', a play on a Gamer Gate slogan. *Not* a joke at their expense, mind you. It's since been removed.
- A shopkeeper, if you decide to talk about them rather than just do business, will admit to being trans. 'Token' inclusivity, but not really forced, either.
- There is a war going on, one location is filled with refugees. Thematic, nobody would blink if it didn't conicide with the refugee crysis in Europe (but must have been written earlier).
- The game has a linear structure, without the semi-open exploration of BG and BG2. I can understand why people may not like it, but, personally, I found it hard to thematically justify side questing in BG2, given the pressure CHARNAME should feel to follow the plot.
- It was buggy on release (what else is new?). I haven't seen any.
Above all, though: this game was possible because a lot of people have a lot of nostalgia for BG. However, BG aged badly in so many ways, it's much easier to mention what aged brilliantly. If you want to play a game you remember BG being, not the game it was, pick one of its spiritual successors, like Tyranny.
The story is okay-ish with a twist, not particularly moving or memorable, but neither 'only you can save the mankind'. The new companions are ok. One is gay, but it has always been a Bioware thing. You will pick your favourites from BG anyway.
One thing I take issue with, are accusations that dungeons are bad. One is at least as good as Durlag's Tower, and the battles, on higher difficulties, are as good as it gets. Better than BG, worse than BG2, by the simple virtue of your abilities at this level.
If you still play BG, play it. Otherwise, a safe pass.
Ignore the reviews complaining about the gameplay or graphics their total bs, if you enjoyed the original games and aren't limited by prejudice you'll enjoy this expansion. If you are so mentally fragile that the inclusion of one very ancillary completely avoidable transsexual npc will ruin a game for you don't play it.
I thought considering the reviews this DLC was mediocre at best, but it is actually quite good. After playing a bit it is hard to stop. It is hard to believe that after more than 20 years the BG engine still holds up and this DLC gives very much the same feeling as playing the originals two decennia back.
I rolled my own party but, that probably was a bit of a waste because most of the characters (like minsc) are available to join your party (which I preferred). It is basically good old adventuring like in the originals but there are some improvements (which I liked) like, when you want to move an object to anyone else's inventory, you see which characters can use it. You also directly see how much it improves certain properties like THAC0 (important is to realize that it uses the current weapon in use for the comparison).
I am in the third chapter now and I can say I liked it a lot so far. They obvious did go through great lengths to get the same look and feel as the originals.
