Still the same thing basically

I won't go into detail here, because others have already done it better than I could in this review, but it's still Baldur's Gate 2 under the bling. Yes, the new party members are hit-or-miss, but guess what? Don't take them if you don't like them! Yes, the technical updates are good, especially for people who don't want to bother with modding. Is the combat still the same? Sure is, always has been. The word missing from the first sentence is "terrible" because I personally never got the hang of the combat in this game. And likely never will. But, people out there like it, so I'm trying to be objective. Also, you get the original game, if you're a crotchety old coot who dislikes anything modern. Win-win!

One of the best classic rpg's around

The enhanced editon was worth purchasing. I played this game when it first came out, and am sincerely enjoying the replay. It also includes throne of Baal and one other add on. Nice to have them all together

The best

I first played this at release when it was called "Shadows of Amn" and the original box set came with 5 discs and a paperback manual. This is obviously the better deal. I've been a fan of GOG ever since I found the Baldur's Gate series here a few years ago and play it every once in a while. A riveting story experience and beautiful environmental art. I wish I could rxperience it for the first time again.

Outstanding with a small caveat

This game really is an encapsulation of what made 2000s CRPGs great. The exploration, the character and party building options, the spells...all of it makes for a really engrossing experience that I am delighted to have had. My only problem is that, for all the good that a game of its time brings, there remains some of the bad. After completing the second to last fight three times in a row, I have to face facts and admit that there is some sort of bug that simply will not let me advance any further. Thus, I am locked out of properly finishing the game. Disappointing, yes, but it still doesn't take away from the journey.

Most fun combat in an RPG ever!

Is there anything to write about BG1+2 that has not been written before? One thing not emphasized enough is how fun the combat can be! It's tactical and the real time with pause causes a lot of chaos to happen to which one has to react. None of the game that have tried to follow (Pillars, Pathfinder,..) have captured it, in part because they've introduced elements such as attacks of opportunity that make the combat less fun. It's the only game of it's type in which I find it fun to play as a thief, stealthing and backstabbing around, placing traps and being a general nuisance. Do yourself a service and play it with the mod Sword Coast Stratagems. It elevates the game to another level!
