So close to excellent

This game does a lot of stuff right, the setting, the lore, the interface. It feels good to play once you get the controls down. My biggest problem with the game is the lack of direction at times, exploring feels good but when you want to get a quest done and the only help the game offers is the repeated dialogue from the NPC asking for help it can be infuriating trying to find where you need to be. This problem is so pervasive that even the online walkthroughs rarely tell you exactly where to be. Another big problem this game has are the puzzles, theyre almost like old point and click adventure puzzles but on a 3D plane. It can really ruin your mood once you finally google it and realize you needed something from an unrelated room, hidden under something you never had a reason to move. Overall I have a love/hate relationship with the game. I'm going to finish it to see it through because it's a good dungeon crawler when it wants to be but if I were thinking about buying it i'd just save the money and watch a Let's Play before making the final decision.

Old School RPG,,,Where the heck am I?!?

I like this game. This is a mercilessly linear monster that just keeps pulling you in. The graphics are good enough that they are not the least bit annoying. The rewards for success are meager at times but always adequate. The magic system has you always on the lookout for new runes and new spells to cast. The game is not loaded with uber weapons and armor, I like that. The monsters and humanoid enemies are challenging. It does remind me a lot of Underworld I and II but I find it to be even more fun. In all, I give 4 out of 5 stars.

Cant believe I missed this

I can say honestly that when this game first came out I had absolutely no interest in it, to me it just looked like Morrowind but not as deep. To my surprise I found that Arx Fatalis is an amazing game with its own unique world and ideas, I was hooked after the first ten minutes and so will you!

Still my favorite

This RPG is still one of my favorite, as beautiful as Morrowind with a tiny world but very well worked. Some Humour, adventure and exploration!

Boy am I tired of back-tracking

about 8 hours in, I feel like I haven't gotten very far. Most of the time was spent back-tracking, or fighting the uncooperative (but interesting) spell casting system, where you draw runes with your mouse. It's very finicky. I can tell there's a bit more to see. There's an alchemy system I can't use yet so ingredients were just taking up space in my inventory. There's a cooking system I kinda like. Flour, water. Bread and pies. Other than that, it's a couple different cooked meats and a few vegetables I could only eat raw, but it's fun putting the food next to a fire and watching it cook. Not bad for such an old game. The combat system is pretty bad. Really slow and awkward. Enemies like to run away when they have low health, dragging the fight on longer. There's a stealth system? The only chance I had to use it was in an enemy fort and it was too easy to get spotted and watch them run off to let the whole camp know. There's a weird charm to the character models and facial animations. Like a bad foreign language dub, the mouths do not match what you hear. My favorite is speaking to a troll who moves his jaw repeatedly to say, "Raaaaaaaaaah" If you like the price, I say go for it. But I don't really have anything to say to recommend this game. It's an old janky mess and I didn't have a whole lot of fun in 8 hours.
