ARMA: Cold War Assault

I don't even play the regular game. I simply go to the editor, choose a massive map, and place soldiers and whatever else I feel like. Then I play. In this sense it is like the ultimate sandbox game. The worlds are enormous and you can place anything in them that you want. Arma Gold Edition is basically the same, but with much better graphics. The game itself is not for everybody. Imagine a sort of open-world Rainbow Six or Counter-Strike, only more realistic than both. Personally I prefer very fake first-person shooters like Doom and Quake. But since you can make your own missions, you can make the game to custom suit your tastes. I like to think, "What if I put these guys behind this building, with these guys helping me, and this tank here...?" and so forth. Then I play.

as the start of the famed arma or armed assault series known by hard-core fps gamers today, it makes for a great example of the way the games differ and compare, it has great controls, fairly good-for-the-time graphics, and smooth gameplay and combat. it also has a mission editor, full campaign spanning more than 10 hrs, and separate missions. try it out if you can, its all out simulation for only 10 bucks, it should be worth $30. 5/5 great game

"All ... Get in ... M119!" This is a game that was amazing at the time with HUGE open world and cool graphics system where "glitchy is the norm, not an exception". The glitchy look works because all animations look glitchy and you just accept it like graphics in Sim Copter for example :) I must admit that the only reason I completed original Operation Flashpoint campaign was because some guy back in the days made a god-mode trainer that worked ONLY for when you are on foot and had to be re-activated if you got out of a vehicle :) I naturally play games in "I should never get hit" mode, but I am not a sadomasochist to replay hours of mission time because of a random bullet or ambush at the end of a long mission. Still had to re-play a lot of missions because not-dying is often not enough. As far as I know that trainer does not work with Resistance and later builds of Operation Flashpoint. So without god-mode or a "tourist" difficulty level I personally will not play any ARMA campaign, even if it really is a great experience. Loved the game and the last peaceful mission was super sweet.

Flashpoint started a sub-genre within the tactical shooter/sim space. Good music, EXCELLENT gameplay, and atmosphere in spades. It has everything; campaigns, single missions, an editor to make more, this game ruled back then and still rules now. Grab it. Grab it and never regret it.

I played this game as a kid (especially Resistance part) but never finished. I remembered it from time to time, and now eventually got it again. I figured I'll check it out for nostalgia's sake and uninstall, but I played the Resistance campaign and could not stop. I finished it, and then started the original campaign - then finished this one too. Yes it's janky and you may need to skip a mission or two due to scripting bugs, but when it's good it's still really, surprisingly good. It has the charm of a game where you can start a mission with literally nothing, and finish it with a kill count of a tank platoon and in a stolen APC. There's spec ops, infantry command, every type of combat vehicle you can name, and the crown jewel - the Resistance campaign. It has great story and plays well into the greatest strengths of the main game. If you can handle jank and less than modern graphics make sure to give it a shot, it's dozens of hours of fun and costs next to nothing
