Inspired by the award-winning board game franchise, Arkham Horror: Mother’s Embrace is an investigation game served with turn-based combat, set in the haunted worlds of H.P. Lovecraft’s Cthulhu mythos. Plunge into an original story written by Fantasy Flight Interactive’s official writers and explore the American Roaring Twenties.
The year is 1926: a professor of astronomy is found dead in her mansion and everything indicates that she has been the victim of a heinous murder. Choose from 12 intrepid investigators from the Arkham Horror games, each with a unique set of skills, and assemble your team to shed the light over this mysterious death.
Find clues, perform interrogations and progress through nine chapters as the story unfolds. Your investigation will take you to visit shadowed institutions and mysterious locales, ranging from Miskatonic University, the Arkham Asylum, and the bayous of Louisiana.
As the investigators get closer to their goal, your squad will have to face curious science, living nightmares, and a sinister cult, whose mad scheme is to bring about the end of everything. Use a large variety of melee and ranged weapons, as well as powerful items and devastating magic spells to defeat your opponents in turn-based combat; while you attempt to retain your sanity.
As you face off against Lovecraftian horrors, your investigators will descend deeper into the depths of madness, affecting their level of sanity and causing traumas that will impact the course of your investigation. Care about your sanity and make the right choices … the Ancient Ones are preparing their return.
Graphics are kind of a let down (quite low resolutions, both textures and 3D models), but kind of match the board game(s).
Gameplay wise, a little bit clunky as the UI is definitly aimed for consoles.
Played through 2 scenarii so far.
Pathfinding is not the best, and movements are slow (even with the "move faster" button held down)
Combat phases are basic, but works.
Ambiance is great :)
3.5 out of 5.
I really quite enjoyed it. Good story, and not horribly difficult. Being an old codger, I don't get too much time to play games but I kept coming back to this one until it was done. And not being able to play it consistently it was easy to remember where I left off and could jump back in without needing to consult manuals or notes or forums.
It's a video game rendition of a board game/card game... What's not to love? The graphics are reminiscent of the artwork on the cards and board game. I would have been offended if they had not taken that route, because that would have disconnected me from the main brand. As it is, it FEELS like I'm playing the card game, and I love it.
The story is great so far. Only played the first few scenarios, but the atmosphere/voice acting/ambient sounds/music... It's all fantastic.
Mechanics may take some getting used to. I honestly wasn't expecting to be able to control the camera at all, but you can! (360 degrees, and zooming in and out a bit) Most games like this stick you with a single view and make you deal with it. So thankful for the immersion that the camera movement brings.
The fighting is turn based with action points and such. Nothing surprising, just the added touch and feel of the board game and card game. They even have similar symbols for health and sanity. Looks and feels solid.
The pace is designed to be slow. This isn't a run and gun game. It's not a beat the clock game. It's an investigation into the horrors of HP Lovecraft. So, I'm taking my time and exploring as I'm meant to do. It's what the level designs encourage. No rush. Just enjoy the atmosphere as the story unfolds. There's consequences for making wrong choices, and rewards for making the right ones, so expect to be losing your sanity and facing the consequences... This is a Lovecraft Game after all!
This gives me the same feel of reading a good book. I'm going to savor this. I'm so glad that they decided to make this game. Too often games that were board games that get turned into video games don't seem to work out very well... This one, however, is defying that stereotype so far.
If you're not a fan of the board game or card game then you may not appreciate this. But, if you like the board game or card game, then chances are you will really enjoy this! That seems to be the target audience.
Like the latte of games, lots of foam, nice and mellow. Half point and click adventuregame, half turnbased rpg, I dont know. I waited quite a while before I could be bothered and then realized I should have played it all along. Sweet gamplay, ok story, and ok length. Almost reminds me of a hidden object game in the presentation, or mobile game. But it was quite charming.
Don't you love games that basically softlock you mid-playthrough by emptying out your inventory when loading a level and then saving?
The combat is the most basic turn based strategy rpg stuff, the investigation boils down to walking through the levels, activating the markers that pop up and choosing one of multiple options on how exactly to interact with it. It is not always which one is the right answer and why. In one instance the recommendation by one of my characters (their knowledge about such interactions is one of their traits) even recommended the right one - and then it turned out to be false. Mysterious stuff is indeed happening in this game, but not the right kind.
