Dark and Beautiful

I may be biased, because I played this back in the days, so do excuse the fangirling. I'll try to be as objective as I can. So let's get the fangirling part out of the way first: OMGERMAGEHRDTHISISSUCHAGOODGAMEPLAYITPLAY! Okay, on we go. On the surface this game seems average. The graphics are on the verge between 2D and 3D, from that ugly period of the 90s where new games looked actually worse than earlier ones. The block-movement is something you need to get used to and the interface is a bit clunky, but when you do get past that, boy, be prepared for some tough puzzles. This game is first a puzzle game and an RPG second. The story is still great and the NPC's interesting and get more and more bizzarre the further you go, but at the core you focus on solving the riddles. The game is very long and no two levels are the same. I suggest you do take a spellcaster, as magic is well made and allows you to do neat tricks along the way. There are some subtle hints that may be easy to miss, so I recommend saving often and having a walktrough handy. All in all, if you like tricky puzzles and some epic fantasy romp, then this game is for you.

A great game that holds up

Anvil of dawn is quite an intriguing game. It was nothing too spectacular back in its era, but it is worth looking at this game with a modern viewpoint. The character selection is quite diverse in race, and with two of the five heroes being women. The armour designs are also very respectful, with only changing proportion between your selected hero. The 3D graphics hold up rather well and do not disturb from the gameplay. Paired up with the masterfully drawn sprites, the aesthetics of the game bring up a rather gloomy and forboding warzone. The music may vary by taste, but it does it job and can sometimes add onto the feeling of bleakness or heroism. One thing to note is that the game doesn't hold your hand, but it's not hard to understand it, and it's a good entry game into the genre. You may get lost occasionally. Thankfully the game features one of the best map systems in any game period. Still, you may end up veering into a dungeon too hard for your current level. Where much stronger enemies and slow healing in a bleak ambient as Anvil of Dawn builds, creates a profoundly horrifying feeling of helplessness and triumph once you come through. Some of the enemies are indeed terrifying, but many others are beyond imaginative. Going from dungeon to dungeon is an experience of its own. Each one features a unique tileset and cast of enemies, ranging from highlanders to harpy men, bloated undead seamen and everything in between. The death animations of enemies are quite amusing to watch as well. You never linger too long in any dungeon and they don't feel drawn out. Slight variations in scenarios also encourage players to replay the game with different heroes and it doesn't feel like a tedious task as in some other games. All in all, Anvil od Dawn is a beautiful and fun game worth standing in any game collection.

Amazing!

2023 - I'm playing this game for the first time. And you know it hasn't aged for a moment! Beautiful handcrafted pixel art, gorgeous animations, smooth controls and intuitive UI. Smart dialogues, beautiful voiceover and the list goes on and on. I'm under impression. This is totally a classic gem!

Best in Class

I couldn't believe it when I saw that this game was available on GoG. This was one of my all-time favorite RTGRPGs, Newer titles in the genre like Grimrock may look good with updated graphics, but they feel empty and soulless, capitalizing on the nostalgia of the better and greater games that came before it. I kept the original box and manual for this game for decades until a freak accident occurred, I thought I'd never have a chance to play it again. While it may be extremely dated, the core game experience is still very solid, all the "class" choices are viable, and in a sense each one provides for a different flavor to the story, I don't want to give any spoilers away. (Go Wizard!) The combat is also solid, everything makes sense, and you feel like you can (and sometimes have to) employ tactics to win the day. The soundtrack is fantastic, hopefully someone like OverClocked ReMix will remaster the OST someday. Until then, you can enjoy it in-game or from YouTube. I loved the voice acting too. The whole game is dark, gritty, grim, with a serious, and bleak tone to it. You really feel like the pressure is on you to save the day. It may not be the most engaging storyline like a modern RPG, but as far as the setting is concerned, it was done masterfully. Like many great games back in the day, despite many hours thrown into the game, it was super stable and apparently devoid of bugs. There's a reason this game won GOTY, now go and save Tempest!

A blast from the past, that I have enjoyed playing for a long time. It's so much easier without having to edit the "Autoexec.bat", and Config.sis" files, or make a "boot" disk. If you know you know!
