X3: Terran Conflict (2008)
It is the year 2938. The long-anticipated encounter between the X Universe and the Earth brings both joy and sorrow. Despite flourishing trade, the clash of the races, cultures and life forms leads to new tensions, mistrust and eventually open conflict!
X3: Albion Prelude (2011)
X3: Albion Prelude plays in the time between the old X Universe and the new. It shows a universe in flux, and prepares players for things to come. The old X Universe is passing; a new X Universe is about to be created.
X3: Farnham's Legacy (2021; Game available in English and German, only on Windows)
Developed by a dedicated group of players from Egosoft's DevNet community, X3: Farnham's Legacy is a new game in the X3 space game series. Set in the years after X3: Albion Prelude, as the chaos caused by the gate shutdown really takes hold, X3: Farnham's Legacy starts very differently to previous games in the X3 series. Trapped in an isolated area of space, you'll first need to make use of the new exploration features to find your way back to civilisation. Then, once you're there, you'll be able to use the new diplomacy options to help shape your relationships with the factions you find.
Mac notice: The game is 32-bit only and will not work on macOS 10.15 and up.

Linux port is broken AF and will only get harder to run as time goes by. A byproduct of Linux's horrible backwards compatibility. As of 2019 the game won't run unless you waste a few hours googling potential library problems. And should you get it to run, well, just wait for your system to update to solve that "issue".
Not recommended if you're a linux user.
Honestly, I do not know why people enjoy this game, or any in the series for that matter. It's not that I haven't given it a fair go, I've had X2 on steam for years, and every time I boot it up, I shut it down soon after. I thought I'd try and see if it was its age that stopped me from enjoying it, so I gave X3 TC/AP a go, and have been trying to play it for over a month now.
What I have come to realise is the X series are just bad games, pure and simple. It only warrants one star as I can see there is a modicum of passion on the developers behalf. It's such a pity, since the concept is great, but after a while I see that, while the fanboys say it's the greatest thing in the world, there's so much wrong with it. I've even tried enjoying it from a 'so bad its good' perspective - but honestly - it's just plain bad.
Where to begin? The fanboys, who I can only imagine enjoy being bored and confused, rate it very highly - despite its unengaging gameplay, wall to wall jank, confusing interface, lack of direction, cliff like learning curve etc. etc. - these high ratings just serve to reinforce developers decisions to keep releasing these ultimately flawed and unfinished games. Check out reviews for X4 if you don't believe me.
What's passed off as 'difficulty' and 'realism' I now see as laziness and poor design that ultimately makes a very frustrating and unenjoyable experience. Games should be difficult BY DESIGN. They have a steep learning curve BY DESIGN. The X series games are difficult, frustrating and boring due to LACK OF DESIGN. Staring at an uninteresting screen, carrying uninteresting cargo for uninteresting people is an ultimately uninteresting experience - and that's once you get past the unintuitive and frustrating controls and menus. Unfortunately there's too much to say against it to fit here. So put simply:
DO NOT BUY THESE GAMES. Unless, of course, you are a sadist who enjoys being frustrated, confused, bored and supporting lazy, unfinished games.
Apparently I'm not supposed to play this game. I bought it and read the manual. There are about 60 different commands depending on what situation you are in. However, there is no command list included and the manual is white print on a dark background with the intent of not being printable in a readable format. I wasted my money on this game because without knowing the commands the game is useless.
I have tried to play this game for the past 4 months and must say this is an incredibly hostile game to the user. I feel conned by all the 5 star reviews in this site. Wasted 20 dollars. The game may be open ended, but the program throws everything it has to stop you from getting anywhere. I´m sorry I ever bought it. I have been a gamer ever since the Vic 20, Commodore 64, Xbox, and PC´s, so I´m not a newbie. I played and enjoyed the original Elite, Wing Commander, Privaterr, Starlance, Freelancer, Space Rangers, etc, but this one takes the cake in user difficulty and impossibility. I can almost see the programmers laughing their little hearts out. Thanks, guys. The joke´s on me. I suggest you avoid this one, unless you are a major league masochist.
omg this is a game for people who like to go to the dentist....
even the very first mission includes hours of exhausting flying in space, nothing to see and nothing to do, just to talk to someone and same again. Hours spent in awaiting of something interesting, but again for nothing. watching snails is more fun
This game is waiting for a review. Take the first shot!
