A World Party without a Remaster

Let me say this first: Worms World Party is an excellent game. It's essentially compromised of what Worms Armageddon was with a few extras like the WormPot modes and a mission editor. The "classic" 2nd generation Worms games all play very similarly and while they deliver a fun time when just playing it with friends, they do have a massive skill ceiling. What is not so excellent is the "Remaster": Whereas Worms Armageddon still occasionally receives updates to this day, Worms World Party's latest update was released in 2003. Given the games are, as said above, almost the same and run on the same engine, you might expect to see the features added in those 15 years of updates in this "Remaster". If you do, you will be disappointed: 1) There's no support for UPnP to ease automatic port forwarding (W:A had this). You need to manually setup a port translation rule in your router for port 17011 or otherwise nobody will be able to join your server. 2) The performance is pretty much terrible. Like W:A, this game received a new 32-bit renderer that in theory supports arbitrary resolutions and 60fps. Due to the a single thread taking up maximal CPU time, this is not achievable: My i7-5930K has a core running at 100% and the game dips between 51-57fps on 1080p. On 1440p, it's 34-38fps and on 5K it's 12-14fps. This is how the game works on one of the fastest CPUs currently available, if you've got a weaker CPU you'll see inferior performance. 3) Resolutions scale very badly: On 1440p, the UI is very small already and on 5K the upper two third of the screen consist of the sky. It's not enjoyable playing this on any resolution higher than 1080p. Windowed mode is not supported either and 4) Networking is a mess. This game uses the same 15-year old WormNET infrastructure as W:A does. It will show your IP address while loading, there's no friends support, anti-cheat, and there are less than 10 players online at a given time. TL;DR: Get W:A instead, the retail is DRM-free.

Lazy and censored.

The typical "Let's just cram in a higher resolution and call it a remaster". Absoluely nothing is scaled, meaning simply that you see much more but it's pointless, because you need a microscope to see it. Broken replay system has already been mentioned multiple times. The worst offender is definitely the censorship: - Preset teams missing (I guess killing Worms named after the English royal family was deemed "inappropriate") - missing/removed due to censorship customization options like flags (42 of them) and soundbanks (voices like "Raj, Whoopsie, Rasta, Kamikaze, Jock etc.) - censored weapon names (Suicide Bomber - Worms Blast, Indian Nuclear Test - Nuclear Test, French Sheep Strike - Sheep Strike etc.). That alone should be reason enough to not buy this.

Worms World Party Remastered freezes every time a worm hits the water, the menus get stuck after you finish any mission and performance is bad. If you get Worms Armageddon and install the latest patch you'll notice that it runs on modern systems, on modern resolutions, performs better, works over the network and even has some useful added features like a color scheme for the color blind and in-game sound volume controls. Stick with that instead.

Armageddon or World Party?

At this point in time Worms World Party Remastered is so glitchy at launch you would be forgiven for thinking Bethesda made it. Look at other reviews for specifics on that though, I'm just going to talk about the game itself and whether it is worth grabbing if you already have Worms Armageddon. Worms Armageddon - Pros: Cheaper of the two games, more lively fan base, various fan mods to improve performance, overall better single-player campaign Cons: single-player mode requires you to beat tutorial missions to move on, if you want to experience the game to the fullest you have to install some mods, voice editor can be really glitchy on certain computers, many players of this one tend to be more elitist then players of the other Worms games On Steam and not GOG, whether this is a pro or con depends on your feelings toward Steam Worms World Party - Pros: more varied multiplayer game modes, Wormpot livens things up even more so, multiplayer missions, voice editor works better, more pre-made content to choose from for customizing teams, single-player campaign requires no tutorials, remastered version eliminates the need for fan made performance mods, improved online, comes with a map editor Cons: As stated before the remastered version is currently unplayable, nowhere near as much mod support Pro and Con: single-player mode is incredibly hard, while it will entertain veteran Worms players newcomers will often find it more frustrating than fun A lot of Worms players would probably burn me at the stake for saying this, but I consider Worms World Party the better game thanks to additional game modes, pre-made content, and more efficient online. That said, if you already have Armageddon and enjoy that you aren't missing too much if you don't get World Party. If you have neither one and want one or the other: at this time get Armageddon, as awesome World Party is this remastered version has a lot problems. Once its working though I could not recommend it more.

Great game, bad release

First thing, to call this a 'remaster' is kind of a misnomer. The game technically runs slightly smoother and has some higher resolutions, but the only thing that's really noticeable is the audio has all been overhauled. The problem is the audio isn't very good now. yeah, it sounds more realistic, I guess, when the bazooka fires, but it has no weight or impact behind the sounds. It sounded cartoony before, but that fit how the game looked and it worked. Thankfully you can turn the new audio off and use the old sound, but considering we're buying this for a 'remaster', that's not much comfort. This wouldn't really be a problem in most cases. Worms World Party is still a fantastic game and my favourite in the series. Not every remaster can be a New 'N' Tasty, I get that. But at least what I expected was it to be optimised for modern machines. And forgive my language, but WWP Remastered runs like absolute shit. I have a fairly powerful gaming PC that can run The Witcher 3 on its highest settings with no issues, so a 1GB game that's essentially just a port of a 2D strategy game from over ten years ago should NOT be crashing on every single bloody match I try and play! I've now attempted to play three games, and the game has crashed every time. Crashed to the point where I can't even alt-tab out of it, I have to go to the task manager to get the damn thing to close. For a ridiculous price point of $17 (seriously guys, ten bucks), WWP Remastered is not worth the buy in its current state. It's a shame because this is one of the most cherished games from my childhood, and to see it released in such a poor state, to the point where the original version runs better than the remaster, is shameful. Team17, fix this!
