Wizardry 6: Bane of the Cosmic Forge
Prepare yourself for a journey of epic proportions as you embark on a quest to retrieve a powerful artifact--the magical pen known as the Cosmic Forge. Its writings affect both Time and Space, allowing its holder to rewrite reality itself! Build your party of six companions, determine their skills, professions, and stats and enter the ancient castle where you’ll find treasure, armor, and powerful magic items to advance your quest. Meet the fortress' wizened and cryptic dwellers who hold secrets that must be unearthed and solve the riddles and puzzles that abound. Beware, however, as you and your party of stalwart adventurers will encounter countless dangers, hazards, and creatures of dazzling and terrifying form. Only by using your magic and skills, ever growing as you progress, can the dangers of the dungeon be vanquished. I got the bundle for $1,49 on a discount and even that feels too much, sorry. Wizardry 7 does not run in DoxBox, but instead in some weird custom window that cannot be resized it seems. For me this makes the game unplayable, and I can't be arsed to set up an old PC just for the purpose of playing this game!
Supposedly most of the 5-star ratings are coming from people who rated the old game, as it was BACK THEN- not what it is TODAY. Unless you still run Windows with some stoneage monitor and resolution, spare your money and get something else, like Legend Of Grimrock for instance.
I still give it 3 stars because W6 runs in DosBox and is thus configurable; no stars for W7.
Wizardry 7 is (together with Wiz8 and Amberstar) one of my top 3 favorite CRPGs. It has great turn-based combat and amazing character progression. Compared to W8 i would say it has worse dialogue system (you can't store topics for following conversations), but it has IMO better atmosphere, riddles and dungeons.
Bane of the Cosmic Forge was the 1st PC game i bought and as such, it holds a place dear to my heart.
I still have the 3.5" floppy install disks, the beautiful comprehensive manual and that pesky Magic Word booklet.
However, don't take this comment lightly. I'm not looking at this thru rose tinted nostalgia glasses. This game is really, really great. It is possibly one of the most addictive games I have played in my life and my heart leapt with joy when I saw this on GOG.
One word of advice. Roll, roll and re-roll you chars. It is worth it, and ultimately, necessary. This is a hardcore RPG!
Wizardry 7 was the first RPG I bought as a teenager and was never able to beat it, despite of different official and inoffical guides. Years after, I replayed Wizardry 7 and was able to progress to the final part of the game, but misplaced the *cursed* serpent staff, hence I wasn't able to beat Wizardry 7. Finally in 2016 I was able to beat both Wizardry 6+7 with my buddy google.com (:-D and was suprised how much fun I had, despite its dated gameplay and level design. Wizardry 6 graphic and sound are nearly unbearable (especially sound effect). You will virtual look at the same grey wall the entire game, which makes navigation impossible, if you don't use a map. There is no mouse control or interface, hence you are forced to use your keyboard. Level design is old school, your party enters a castle, progress to the next floor, each floor is a maze, you find an item move to the next floor. However the detailed class and deep battle system is where Wizardry 6 truly shines. I spent hours of rolling my perfect party (Lord, Valkyrie, Monk, Faery Ninja , Priest, Mage) and leveling/grinding my party to perfection. Wizardry eptomize the classic hardcore RPG, inexorable battles, lots of random encounters, but a strong sense of progression, each level make your party stronger. Wizardry 6 had a well written story + 3 different endings and you can import your entire party to Wizardry 7, which makes Wizardry 7 substantial less grind heavy. Wizardry 7 did improve everything, graphic and sound are much better and there is a proper interface. Wizardry 7 introduced sci-fi elements in the rather classic setting, now you explore an entire planet rather than a castle. It is an open world, bit this also makes Wizardry 7 a lot harder than 6. Moving from A to B is even a bigger issue, because the world is huge and a lot of back tracking is required for many quests (I spent 90% looking at my map than looking at my screen). It is obvious that Wizardry can't be beaten without a proper guide and world map. Overall it was a remarkable enjoyable experience, however I can't recommend Wizardry to casual RPG players.
I remember Wiz 7 DOS very well. I had the german translation. And the text parser was broken. No translation of "any rumours". A very nice game, but you could not finish it in the translation. Wiz 7 Gold is new for me - the speech output has low quality today, but the - still too colorful - graphics are the same. And the rattkin bandits ambush kills again my party.
But now the important Wiz7 Gold on Windows 10 stuff: Right click on the Icon, select "Behandeln von Kompatibilitätsproblemen". In the popup window select "Empfohlene Einstellungen testen". In the next popup window click button "Programm testen...". These clicks give you mouse and keyboard input.
Have fun and say hello to the space chick in the red rocket!
Only 4 points out of 5 because the game is DIFFICULT. And the rolling of dice to get good characters is still a waste of time.
This game is waiting for a review. Take the first shot!
